Fire tragedy kills 3 kids
This tragedy occurred despite their mother being in the home. All the kids still died. Wonder if the Tapas lot's absent phones were on charge in the apartments? Of course this would never happen to them. Oh no, not to such 'responsible' parents!
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1342734/House-killed-3-children-caused-mobile-phone-charger.html
A blaze which killed three children may have been started by a phone charger, it emerged yesterday.
William Hudson, nine, his five-year-old brother Anthony and sister Maddie, three, died after the fire ripped through their three-storey terrace home.
Firemen found them in the arms of their mother Samatha Hudson, 27.
The children died shortly afterwards but Miss Hudson survived. She is still in hospital, unaware that her sons and daughter perished.
It is feared she may have suffered permanent brain damage as a result of the amount of smoke she inhaled.
Her brother Peter, 30, said yesterday that the family had been told a Sony Ericsson charger was the likely cause of the fire.
‘The focus of the investigation has been on something that was plugged in,’ he said.
‘It looks like it could have been a phone charger.’
The fire broke out in the living room of the home in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, on November 11.
It quickly spread through the ground floor, leaving Miss Hudson and Maddie trapped on the first floor and William and Anthony asleep on the second floor.
When she heard the smoke alarm, Miss Hudson grabbed Maddie from her bedroom and rushed to the boys’ bedroom.
Neighbours heard the youngsters screaming and, minutes later, firemen were able to get inside and carry out the family before the flames reached them.
But the brothers and their sister had been overcome by smoke and, according to neighbours, looked like ‘little rag dolls’. They were pronounced dead in hospital.
Mr Hudson added: ‘I can just imagine Maddie screaming and panicking. Sam must have breathed so much smoke in as she took her up the stairs.
‘I have been in the house myself and seen the heat damage and I don’t know how she managed to get up there.
‘She was found with all the kids cuddled round her. They were all unconscious but all together.
‘She probably won’t remember anything about what happened, which might be a good thing.
‘We are always saying to ourselves, "What if?" and "If only".'
Miss Hudson, a single mother, remains in Scarborough General Hospital, where she is breathing without support but is largely unresponsive.
‘She is like a stroke victim,’ said Mr Hudson.
‘She can’t move her arms or legs or talk or understand anything.
‘Sometimes, she will make eye contact with us or squeeze our hands, but that’s it.
‘My mum is still crying every time it is mentioned. My dad is not normally an emotional person, but I have seen him cry more in the last month than I ever have in my life.’
Jo Bullock, of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, urged people to switch off appliances such as phone chargers when not in use.
She said: ‘Thankfully, incidents like this are quite rare, but people need to be aware that electrical items do start fires.
‘This is a sad case that highlights the need to be careful about what you leave on overnight. People should also ensure they do not overload sockets and check their smoke detectors are working.’
Last night Humberside Fire And Rescue Service confirmed that the blaze had begun in the living room but would not confirm how it started. Any suspicious circumstances have been ruled out.
A spokesman said: ‘The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing and we anticipate it will be completed early in the new year.’

Re: Fire tragedy kills 3 kids
Terrible tragedy...
I was saying yesterday about the batteries in my portable phones...they are 550mA/H , AAA, and the recommended charge rate is 55 mA for 10 hours.
After only about 2 hours the batteries get very hot to the touch so I am thinking of not using the base chargers but use either another external charger if it is a slow rate charger or build a charger with a controllable current rate. Rechargeable Ni/Cd batteries should stop being charged when they get warm and certainly not let get hot as they could explode but many chargers don't seem to drop to trickle charging.
The quicker we move over to Lithium ion batteries the better and drop Ni/Cd. Mobile phones and laptops already use Lithium ion batteries.
Remember the recall a couple of years ago when laptop batteries got hot?

As far as I'm aware this poor woman is still not able to be communicated with. I don't want this to sound awful, but perhaps it's a blessing that she may never know that her three children died.

I too am saddened by this awful tragedy - what a terrible thing to happen.
Even worse if it was a phone charger that started the fire.

That would be so dreadful. Just a phone charger that lots of people leave plugged in and forget about. It just seems so harmless, but something so small and apparently harmless, can get really hot. Such a small innocuous seeming item to cause such terrible loss of life.
