Margaret Moran investigated over staffing expenses
The police investigation into the former Labour MP Margaret Moran has been widened to include payments made to staff through expenses.
By Holly Watt 7:00AM GMT 07 Feb 2011
Miss Moran, who stood down as the MP for Luton South at last year’s general election, was already being investigated over claims for expenses on her second home.
In 2008-09, Miss Moran claimed £97,312 for paying her office staff. The staffing allowance maximum was £90,854, but MPs are allowed to transfer funds from a separate office allowance. She was accused of using her staff, as well as Parliamentary notepaper, to help a company partially run from her constituency office.
Leaked documents show that Miss Moran got her staff to work for Equality Networks, a non-profit group that helps impoverished communities, of which she is the unpaid chairman.
Since 2001, Miss Moran claimed more than £640,000 in staffing allowances. The House of Commons Standards Commissioner, John Lyon, launched an inquiry into Miss Moran but suspended the investigation while the police probed her expenses claims.

This bout of "can'tgotocourtitis" is certainly doing the rounds and may yet become an epidemic. Mr Dewani was too ill to attend his hearing today too and the prognosis doesn't look good as he may not be fit for his extradition hearing in May.

Re: Margaret Moran investigated over staffing expenses
Why not emulate the Chinese method of dealing with those suspected of crime who avoid going to court to defend themselves? Try them in their absence..... and find them guilty.
Everyone knows the woman is guilty of deceit, fraudulent accounting and abuse of public trust.. But she is not alone in her corruption, a huge percentage of her 'honorable' colleagues and civil servants in general should be facing investigation and prosecution also.

Yes - it seems to be de rigueur to profess illness anything not to face the consequences of their 'stretching of the rules'.
i think your right - the cases should go ahead with out them - but in this case I think she is going to get away with most of this because she resigned - they allowed immunity if they gave up their seat. The fraud bit will probably not amount to very much.

The amount of money fraudulently obtained is, in my opinion immaterial as is the fact thathem many 'Honourable Members'have returned some of the monies stolen..
These smooth talking ingrates have robbed the very people who they were elected to represent and serve. If they had an ounce of decency and shame between them they would all resign.
How they stand up in Parliament with straight faces and criticise the likes of Saddam Hussain, Mubarak, Idi Armin and Castro as despotic self centrered criminals without being struck down by lightning bolts I will never understand...
