Re: THE DOMINO EFFECT IN THE MIDDLE EAST
On the News earlier , don"t know where the report was from, but Rebels saw some Gaddafi Soldiers holding up a White Flag and thought they were going to surrender but when they got closer the Soldiers opened fire.
Britain, France, Germany and the U.S. are to have a Meeting tonight by telephone to dicuss the Nato no fly zone and other matters., such as in the
event Gaddafi was removed from power, it would be easier if the Country was Governed by ex Gaddafi Staff who would be more experienced in
running the Country than the Rebels.

I think quite a few of his staff defected in the early days - certainly the Embassy staff (IIRC). I think there's a way to go with the fighting yet, though.

DUBAI (AlArabiya.net)
A Libyan man announced his intention to propose to Eman al-Obaidi who made headlines after storming into a Tripoli hotel to tell foreign media the story of her gang-rape by Gaddafi security forces.
Farag al-Ghaithi, from the northeastern Mediterranean city of Darna, declared that he will propose to Obaidi whose courage he greatly admired, the electronic version of the Libyan newspaper Libya al-Youm reported Monday.
According to the paper, Gaithi headed with a group of friends and family members to the eastern city of Tobruk, where Obaidi lives with her family.
Obaidi’s case moved Libyans since her pleas were broadcast on satellite channels and video sharing websites like You Tube.
Libyans showed their solidarity with Obaidi on the social networking website Facebook and protested against the brutality to which she was subjected to.
In the video that shocked Libyans and viewers from all over the world, Obaidi said she was raped by 15 of Gaddafi’s officers after being arrested at a Triploi checkpoint.
Libyan authorities arrested her in the hotel in which she was telling her story to foreign media and said she was a “drunkard” and a “maniac.”
She was later released amid promises that her rapists are to be tracked down and prosecuted.

Re: THE DOMINO EFFECT IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Libyan woman's hotel scuffle highlights Gaddafi's abuses
When she rushed into a Tripoli hotel over the weekend claiming she was raped and tortured, Iman al-Obeidei was breaking deep societal taboos. But her experience, experts say, is just the tip of the iceberg of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's abuses.
By Leela JACINTO (text)
Days after she burst into a Tripoli hotel screaming about her alleged torture and rape to a group of startled, breakfasting foreign journalists, Iman al-Obeidei’s whereabouts is still being contested, with Libyan officials offering contradictory accounts of the woman who turned the spotlight on the brutality of Muammar Gaddafi’s security apparatus.
Al-Obeidi made headlines over the weekend when the distraught, dishevelled, but articulate Libyan woman was tackled by hotel staff and government minders who dragged her away from Tripoli’s Rixos Hotel even as foreign journalists struggled to save her.
On Monday morning, Libyan government spokesman Musa Ibrahim told journalists that al-Obeidei had been released and was with her sister in the Tajoura neighbourhood of Tripoli.
A later version by the government spokesman claimed she was “freed, but the prosecution is still questioning her to determine the circumstances” of her rape claim.
Al-Obeidei’s parents however hotly refuted Ibrahim’s official account in an interview with the Arabic Al Jazeera TV station. In a Monday afternoon interview, the parents, who were not named, said their daughter was a lawyer, and that she was being held at Gaddafi's Bab al-Aziziya compound in the Libyan capital.
Consistency has not been the Libyan government’s forte since al-Obeidei publicly took on the Gaddafi regime with her valiant effort to get her story out.
Ibrahim - the Exeter-educated Libyan government spokesman who has turned into a household name in recent days - has offered a range of defamatory accounts of al-Obeidei’s character over the past 48 hours, claiming, at various points, that she was drunk, mentally ill, a criminal, and a prostitute.
At a hastily convened press briefing on Saturday shortly after al-Obeidei stormed the Rixos Hotel, Ibrahim promised reporters that they would be given a chance to interview her.
But more than 48 hours later, no such interview was forthcoming – to nobody’s surprise.
“They don’t care,” said Anas el Gomati, a political analyst and Paris-based Libyan exile, referring to Gaddafi’s security officials. “Of course Iman’s situation is very embarrassing for them, but this is just the tip of the iceberg of crimes committed by the government against the Libyan people.”
Four decades of abuses committed with impunity
Gross and systemic human rights violations have been a feature of Gaddafi’s 42-year reign and they have been committed with impunity, according to international human rights groups.
But over the past few weeks, the human rights abuses – including arbitrary arrests, detention without charges, disappearances and custodial torture – have reached “unprecedented levels,” according to el Gomati.
In an interview with FRANCE 24, Malcolm Smart, Middle East and North Africa Director of the London-based Amnesty International, described al-Obeidi’s account as “stomach-churning'' and called on Libyan authorities to launch an independent and impartial investigation into the case.
“Her account is consistent with a pattern that we have seen in Libya for many years, of silencing any dissidents who attempt to speak out,” said Smart. “In this case, it’s very worrying that it was going on, that such heavy-handed methods were used under the glare of the international media.”
Writers, bloggers, pro-democracy activists in detention
In its latest briefing, “Libya: detainees, disappeared and missing,” published Wednesday, Amnesty International lists extensive rights abuses in Libya since the current unrest began in mid-February 2011.
LIBYA
London conference debates life in post-Gaddafi Libya
While accurate statistics are hard to arrive at since Libyan authorities do not release figures and many areas of the country are inaccessible, the Amnesty team interviewed relatives of several people who disappeared in the lead-up to and following the February 17 “Day of Rage” protests, which sparked the current uprising.
Days before the February 17 protests, authorities in the second largest Libyan city of Benghazi arrested Fathi Tourbil, a prominent lawyer and representative of families of victims of a 1996 massacre in Tripoli’s notorious Abu Salim prison, where an estimated 1,200 prisoners were killed.
The Abu Salim prison massacre has been a potent symbol of Gaddafi’s tyranny for many ordinary Libyans and Tourbil’s arrest sparked further protests in Benghazi.
While Tourbil himself was subsequently released, a number of Libyan writers, bloggers, pro-democracy activists and protesters were arrested in the lead-up to the February 17 demonstrations, according to Amnesty International.
Violence 'embedded in every corner, rock and brick'
A second wave of detentions, according to Amnesty International, occurred on Feb. 20, the day Benghazi fell to opposition protesters. As the news of the city’s fall spread, protesters stormed a city military compound unaware that some pro- Gaddafi troops had not yet left. Relatives of the missing believe their loved ones were forcibly taken as troops fled the compound.
The third wave of disappearances has involved fighters and civilians – including medical personnel – caught up in the conflict after the Feb. 20 fall of Benghazi.
Accounts by witnesses as well as released or escaped detainees have been grim with widespread reports of the use of torture in Gaddafi’s detention facilities – including the notorious Abu Salim prison.
“Violence unfortunately is embedded in every corner, rock and brick of Gaddafi’s Libya, it’s the terror we’ve lived under for the past 40 years,” said el Gomati. “But the violence is not just physical, it’s mental as well.”
Proof of the insidious nature of Gaddafi’s repression, according to el Gomati, is the manner in which al-Obeidi was sexually abused even as Libyan authorities attempted to subsequently besmirch her character in a conservative Muslim society.
“Iman has not only gone out and bravely taken on Gaddafi’s government, she has also broken a social taboo by talking about her rape,” said el Gomati.
In her interview with Al Jazeera, al-Obeidi’s mother said she was proud her daughter had the courage to publicly come forward about her rape.
“I don't feel ashamed, instead my head is up high,'' said the teary-eyed mother, holding a Libyan opposition flag, maintaining that her daughter ``broke the barrier that no other man could break''.

Well, I think crimes against humanity is long standing in Libya - the world is watching out for Eman now. But how many other women (and men??) are going through the ordeal she's been through? It's probably happening this very minute - nauseating thought. But this is what the Libyans have been living with for the last 40 years. Appalling!

I agree but what is it that he can still command support? Do these Governments meeting in London right now actually believe if they agree Gaddafi
will escape War Crime charges if he leaves Libya is going to impress him? I"m afraid it will take a bomb under his chair to get rid of him.

Re: THE DOMINO EFFECT IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Dear God!!
http://www.channel4.com/news/libyan-woman-faces-charges-after-rape-claims
Tuesday 29 March 2011
Eman al-Obeidi, the woman who accused Gaddafi's men of raping her, now faces criminal charges, according to the Libyan Government. A spokesman told Channel 4 News the "accuser was now the accused".
Libyan woman Eman al-Obeidi burst into a hotel full of journalists on Saturday claiming she had been raped and beaten by Gaddafi's men.
A scuffle between journalists and Government minders followed. Ms Obeidi, who was shouting and crying, was eventually driven away by Gaddafi's officials.
The Government said on Sunday she had been released and was with her family.
But on Tuesday morning there was an unexpected development. A Libyan Government spokesman told Channel 4 News Foreign Affairs Correspondent Jonathan Rugman that Eman al-Obeidi had committed a crime by revealing the names of the men she accused of raping her.
Ibrahim Moussa said the "accuser had now become the accused".
Moussa said he was unclear whether she was with her family or being questioned in custody.
Eman al-Obeidi made her dramatic entrance as everyone was having breakfast writes Channel 4 News Foreign Affairs Correspondent Jonathan Miller.
She started screaming: "Look what Gaddafi's men have done to me". Everyone in the room just froze.
We saw a government minder draw a gun from inside his jacket.

Accusations of bribery
In a separate development Eman al-Obeidi's mother, Aisha Ahmad, told journalists she had been contacted by the authorities about her daughter and how she could be freed.
"Last night they called from Gaddafi's compound and asked me to convince my daughter to change what she said, and we will set her free immediately and you can take anything you and your children would ask for," she said.
"Money, new home, just ask your daughter to change what she has said. I told my daughter, keep silent," she said, holding a picture of Obaidi to the camera.
It was not immediately clear when the interview was filmed.
Read more in the Channel 4 News Special Report on Libya
Ahmad said Ms Obeidi had been "mistreated by those criminals and cheaters, Gaddafi and his followers".
"Eman was kidnapped in front of the camera," she said. "She was trying to appear to the world, she wanted to tell them what was happening in Misrata, in Benghazi and the east. She wanted to reveal that."
Wadad Omar, who said she was her cousin, said on Sunday that Ms Obeidi was first arrested after taking part in a protest in the early days of the uprising in the western city of Zawiyah. The revolt erupted in mid-February.
Residents in Benghazi, bastion of the insurgency against Gaddafi, staged a demonstration in support of Ms Obeidi on Sunday.

Actually Margaret some of the Journalists tried to intervene and asked where Eman was being taken and why, but the Libyan men wouldn"t answer
and pushed Eman into a Car. One thing in her favour, the World saw what happened and have heard her Mothers Comments so I"m sure some Human Rights group or Diplomats will try to see her.

Re: THE DOMINO EFFECT IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Free Libyan satellite TV channel from Qatar
Published: 08.17 Europe/London, March 29, 2011 by Broadband TV News Correspondent
Libya is getting its own independent satellite channel, according to Radio Nederland’s Media Network. A group of Libyans from abroad and inside the country is setting up the new station to broadcast news and commentary about Libya for a Libyan audience, with the aim of countering Libyan state propaganda and promoting dialogue about the country’s future after Muammar al Gaddafi.
The channel, to be called simply Libya TV, launches this week in Doha after less than two weeks of hurried preparation. Its founder is the avuncular Mahmud Shammam, a well-known Libyan expatriate journalist who edits Foreign Policy’s Arabic edition. For the first month, Shammam hopes to broadcast four hours of original programming each day, including a 20-minute news bulletin and a half-hour talk show, and then extend it thereafter.
Libya TV is being funded primarily by donations from Libyan businessmen abroad, including one $250,000 (€177,000) contribution from a wealthy Libyan donor in Britain. The state of Qatar, in addition to agreeing to host the network on its soil, has turned over the facilities and technical staff of Al-Rayyan, a local channel focused on cultural programming.
