BODY OF NEWBORN BABY GIRL DUMPED IN UNDERGROWTH.

The body of a newborn baby girl has been discovered in undergrowth close to a footpath in Essex.

The vest found alongside the baby's body is not sold in Britain



The child's body was found wrapped in a black bin liner near the Ingrebourne river in Rainham on Sunday afternoon.

Police said passers-by came across the baby off the A1306 New Road with a "distinctive" Primark vest which is not sold in the UK.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police's Child Abuse Investigation Command are now searching for the girl's mother amid concern about her welfare.

Despite carrying out extensive inquiries, they have been unable to trace her.

"The baby was newborn and we are concerned that the mother might need urgent medical attention," Detective Inspector Colin Welsh said.

"I would appeal to anyone with information to contact us.

"The vest inside the bin liner is quite distinctive and I am hoping that someone might recognise it."

Officers would also like to hear from anyone who might have seen the bag being left in the undergrowth, which they believe could have been some weeks ago.

A post-mortem examination was held at Great Ormond Street Hospital but was unable to establish a cause of death. Further tests are now being carried out.

Sad as this is, I just hope the baby was stillborn when wrapped in the Binliner and dumped. If it was alive, surely the Mother could have left it at a Hospital Entrance or somewhere where it would easily be found.

What sad and awful story!

The body was never meant to be found, it had been in the undergrowth for a few weeks, so why wasn"t it buried? Such a sad story.

There is no respect for life, human or otherwise in this country anymore, just when you think we have sunk as low as we can get something like this happens....

I heard this after watching a programme last night about a baby dubbed 'Gatwick Gary' he was left in some toilets at Gatwick Airport in April 1986.

Although he's had a wonderful upbringing he doesn't know if he was born to a foreign woman who flew in and dumped him, they did do DNA tests (wonderful that DNA!) that showed he was born to parents with western European heritage so it's a start, but l was so angry - the least his mother owes him is to come forward and explain why she dumped him, if she's still alive.

He had this letter published in October last year but as of yet no response.

As I suspected, the journalist is Angela Carless. She has done some really good work helping adults find biological families.

Thanks for the link Margaret and Steven has obviously grown up to be an articulate caring Man. Not sure if it is such a wise thing to try to find your birth Mother in these cases, I know persoinally of two cases where a baby was placed for adoption and searched and found their birthmothers when they were adults. For a while it worked , but there was still that little niggle "you couldn"t have loved me or you would never have put me up for adoption, in Steven"s case, abandoned.

Panda, l agree with you. Steven met up with other abandoned babies to hear their stories, one woman was abandoned in a phone box and managed to trace her parents. She had been abandoned because her parents had had a previous baby girl 9 months before and couldn't afford another mouth to feed.

They were married at the time and were still married but the father didn't want to meet her he wanted to 'leave the past in the past' - imagine knowing you were dumped for such silly reasons whilst your parents cared for your slightly elder sibling. Heartbreaking.

I will never understand how a mother can dump a baby.
