British woman decapitated in Tenerife supermarket
Sky News
The 60-year-old woman was reportedly attacked in a supermarket in the town of Los Cristianos on the island.
A Bulgarian man, believed to be homeless, has been detained by Spanish police.
Spanish media reported that witnesses saw the man enter a Chinese supermarket at the Valdes Shopping Centre and, without saying a word, attacked the woman with a knife, cutting her head off.
A regional government spokeswoman said the killer is understood to have obtained a knife from inside the store to launch his attack.
Eyewitness Colin Kirby describes the scene
Colin Kirby, of tenerifemagazine.com witnessed the event. He told Sky News: "It was all a bit surreal I was heading past the commercial centre and saw a group of people by the entrance and a medical guy going in form the health centre.
"I assumed someone had fainted, walked on, and then I could hear screaming and shouting.
"I glanced behind me and a guy was ambling down the street holding what I assumed to be a joke head, by the hair."
He said security guards gave chase to him, eventually managing to bring him down and restrain him.
"The guy did not seem completely right to me, he was a bit dishevelled, not particularly smart and as he was walking with the head he was muttering.
"It was a bizarre scene."
Manuel Reveron, a local a councillor for citizen security said: "Apparently this gentleman without any motive or any reason, although for this there is no reasoning, entered the shop and then cut this woman's neck and took the head in his hand outside up to the sidewalk.
"Then the security guard was able to throw him on the ground and we covered the macabre (sight)."
A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are aware of reports of the death of a British national in Tenerife and are urgently investigating."
Los Cristianos is home to many British ex-pats.

Isn't it! Imagine going shopping while on holiday and that happens! And that crazy guy walking down the street carrying the woman's head! The woman's family must be truly in a state of shock.

Witnesses said it looked like a prosthetic head, dear god, I think I'd faint if I saw that!
He'd recently got out of a mental hospital.

BULGARIAN ATTACKER WAS ADMITTED TO PSYCHIATRIC UNIT IN THE UK

29 year old Deyan Deyanov is accused of killing a 60 year old British woman in Los Cristianos, Tenerife
The 28 year old Bulgarian, Deyan Deyanov, who is accused of beheading the 60 year old English woman, Jennifer Mills-Westley in Tenerife on the 13th of this month, has been revealed to have been admitted in the past to a psychiatric facility in Britain.
He was admitted to Glan Clwyd Hospital in Wales last summer for his own safety under the UK Mental Health Laws. What is not clear is whether he was discharged or escaped from the facility, and an investigation has now been announced to clarify the circumstances.
A spokesman for the hospital said that they had had no contact with the patient since last October.
Meanwhile The Sun reports that two of his ex girlfriends have spoken of his violent tendencies and drug addiction. One of them named by the paper as Rachael Sharpe, said he tried to strangle her when she refused to call him the messiah.
‘On one occasion he told me that he wanted to kill someone to see what he felt, that he wanted to stab someone’.
The murder of the British pensioner has led M.P. Steve McCabe to ask for a revision of the protocols which allow someone with mental problems to leave a psychiatric institution.
‘There needs to be an urgent investigation into how someone in a psychiatric hospital can leave the centre, travel and commit a crime like this’, said McCabe.

Re: British woman decapitated in Tenerife supermarket
I'm not sure I understand this
"He was admitted to Glan Clwyd Hospital in Wales last summer for his own safety under the UK Mental Health Laws. What is not clear is whether he was discharged or escaped from the facility, and an investigation has now been announced to clarify the circumstances"
surely someone has to know if the guy was discharged or escaped, and if he had escaped then shouldn't there have been a public warning? The man obviously hasn't become dangerous overnight, he seems to have been dangerous for a long time and yet nobody seemed to care where he was or what he was doing !! Unbelieveable.
