THE Chief Constable of Cleveland Police and his deputy have been arrested today as part of a corruption probe into Cleveland Police Authority.
Sean Price, and deputy Derek Bonnard were questioned by detectives at a police station in North Yorkshire on suspicion of misconduct in a public office, fraud by abuse of position and corrupt practice. A woman was also arrested on suspicion of the same offences.
In May, Warwickshire Police were brought in to oversee a wide-ranging corruption investigation after allegations were made against present and former members of Cleveland Police Authority - the force’s governing body.
Neither the Warwickshire or Cleveland force, nor that in North Yorkshire, would release any more details on the arrested people or say where they are being questioned.
But the Gazette understands from sources that the three were arrested at about 6am. The Home Office is also believed to have been informed.
A statement from Warwickshire Police today said: "Police officers conducting a criminal investigation into a number of people with current or past associations with Cleveland Police Authority and the manner in which the authority may have conducted some of its business have this morning arrested three people on suspicion of misconduct in a public office, fraud by abuse of position and corrupt practice.
"Two men and a woman were arrested and have been taken to a police station in North Yorkshire where they will be interviewed later today.
"A number of premises are being searched in connection with these arrests."
An extraordinary meeting of Cleveland Police Authority was due to be held behind closed doors today and a statement was expected to be released later.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission released the following statement: "The IPCC can confirm that it has been informed of developments and would anticipate referrals from the police authority." Nobody from the Home Office was available for comment.

Chief Constable Sean Price and Deputy Chief Constable Derek Bonnard were arrested early this morning.
An unnamed woman has also been detained.
They are being held at a police station in North Yorkshire where they will be questioned.
It is believed the arrests are linked to a Warwickshire police investigation into allegations surrounding the business conduct of past and present members of Cleveland police authority.
Sky sources say the inquiry is examining the inappropriate awarding of low-value contracts.
Mr Price is also under investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission following claims that he tried to get a job for the daughter of the then chairman of the Cleveland Police Authority, Dave McLuckie.
Warwickshire police say a number of premises are being searched following the arrests.
Both men had been due to take part in an online public forum later today.

WOW!
What a bit of news!
Now strangely enough, as soon as I see the word Cleveland, I'm thinking of late seventies, early eighties paedophilia scandal in Cleveland, where I believe dozens of youngsters were lifted from their beds at all hours and fostered all over the county.
Most of these accusations proved to be groundless at a much later date,by which time the children had been traumatised, not to mention the parents. Does anybody remember this?I had Quaker friends who tried to help at the time. I think there was a contemporary scandal in one of the Scottish island too. Does anybody remember?

Yes, I do.
The Cleveland child abuse scandal occurred in Cleveland, England in 1987, where 121 cases of suspected child sexual abuse were diagnosed by Dr Marietta Higgs and Dr Geoffrey Wyatt, paediatricians at a Middlesbrough hospital (in the now abolished county of Cleveland). After a number of court trials, 26 cases involving children from twelve families were found by judges to have been incorrectly diagnosed, and cases involving 96 of the 121 children alleged to be victims of sexual abuse were dismissed by the courts. In the other cases, the child was subject to a child-protection order, and some were removed from their parents' care permanently.
