Jordanian kills daughter to 'cleanse honour'

..A Jordanian has been charged with killing his 23-year-old daughter to "cleanse his honour" over an alleged affair with a man, a judicial official said on Sunday.

"The 50-year-old man strangled his daughter on Saturday before handing himself in and confessing to the crime," which took place in the Red Sea port of Aqaba, the official told AFP.

"He claimed that he killed her to cleanse his honour after learning that she had been involved in a romantic relationship with a man."

Murder is punishable by death in Jordan but in so-called "honour killings" courts can commute or reduce sentences, particularly if the victim's family asks for leniency.

Between 15 and 20 women die in such murders each year in the Arab kingdom, despite government efforts to curb such crimes.
