AIR BERLIN MAKES LARGE CUTS AT ALICANTE AIRPORT AND BLAMES THE BRITISH
A spokesman said part of the problem was that the Germans don't like the British, and the British are the majority in Benidorm hotels

Air Berlin has cancelled five direct flights from El Altet airport as the company puts a tough cost cutting scheme into operation with the goal of saving 200 million €. The plan will leave 18 planes on the ground, and Alicante is reportedly hard hit because of the high seasonality of traffic at El Altet. In addition numbers show a marked fall in German traffic using the airport this August compared to last, down 22% with 78,988 German tourists.
A spokesman for the airline is reported by Europa Press of having commented that part of the problem is that the Germans don’t like the British, and the Brits are the majority in Benidorm hotels. The town’s hoteliers have described that as ‘an urban legend’.
The cutbacks come into effect in November and will see the number of direct destinations from Alicante reduced by 45%. The lost destinations are Frankfort, Munich, Nuremburg, Stuttgart and Zurich. The airlines connections to Berlin, Hamburg and Palma remain.
The Air Berlin decision follows the earlier announcement from Ryanair reducing flights from Alicante, and dispels the opinion voiced by the PP at the time that Air Berlin could take up those vacant slots.
Air Berlin is one of five airlines which use El Altet airport currently.

Re: Charming !
I don't think this is the reason at all - fair enough when you go on holiday you like to relax - not fight of towels - they've just found somewhere else to go instead.

Re: Charming !
I wonder if it is just a myth about Germans and sun loungers!
Where did it originate from I wonder.

Re: Charming !
Not sure if it's an urban legend but all nationalities do it now. I resent being on holiday but have to rush to get up early just to get a sun lounger. I refuse to do it so won't go to any hotel where the reviews say 'not enough sunbeds' or that you have to pay extra for them.
Daft l know but there should be enough sunbeds for everyone IMO what are we paying them for we're going abroad for the sun!! I want a sun lounger and l want it free, waaah waah!
In any case it sounds like the Germans should be blamed there, why don't they like us??? Is it because of the war, ooops l mentioned it.

Re: Charming !
Most of the hotels I have been in recently have big notices up around pool areas now stating...please do not reserve the sun loungers. However it certainly wasn't an urban legend, I have been in hotels where some of the Germans would get up before dawn and tie the sun loungers together with cardigans and jumpers, so definitely not an urban legend.
