GORDON Brown is taking a £2,000-a-week handout from the taxpayer to fund his work as a former Prime Minister while raking in more than £600,000 from private organisations as a globe-trotting speech-maker.
The handout is on top of his generous expenses as an MP.
He was paid £84,000 of the little known Public Duty Costs Allowance in 2010/11 and is entitled to a further £115,000 this year.
The state handouts, set up by John Major in 1991 to help the recently deposed Margaret Thatcher, are offered to all former prime ministers for work such as answering letters or attending public events.
Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show that since 2006 Mr Brown, Tony Blair, Mr Major and Baroness Thatcher claimed a total of £1.4million.
In 2010/11 Mr Brown received £172,000 in salary and MP’s office expenses but made just one speech in the Commons.
Mr Brown’s Commons register of interests shows that over the past 12 months, he was paid £630,000 for speeches to banks and other organisations.

He states alongside each entry in the register: “I am not receiving any money from this engagement personally.
It is being held by the Office of Gordon and Sarah Brown for the employment of staff to support my ongoing involvement in public life.”
The Office of Gordon and Sarah Brown has been called a “fund” but the Sunday Express can reveal it is a limited company, in which the husband and wife each own half the shares.
Set up in September last year, it has not yet filed any accounts. Its costs would appear to be minimal because clients generally pay all travel expenses on Mr Brown’s international trips.

The Commons register shows he and an unnamed member of staff received £100,000 worth of free flights and hotels for his speech-making.
The most expensive was a £16,627 flight and hotel bill for a two-and-a-half hour lecture to Visa International in Singapore last April.
We asked his office how many staff were employed and for assurances that the allowances were not being used by his company.
In a statement last night a spokesman for Mr Brown said: “Office expenditure, including salaries and running costs, is paid from income received by the Office of Gordon and Sarah Brown for paid speaking engagements undertaken by Mr Brown. We are budgeting to meet salaries, accommodation costs and staff expenses of around £600,000 a year. As previously made clear, Mr Brown does not seek nor receive any personal remuneration for the speeches and writing he does, nor for the voluntary work he undertakes.”
Details of Mr Brown’s finances came to light as Channel 4 prepares to broadcast a Dispatches documentary about Mr Blair’s earnings tomorrow night.
He has reportedly made £10million from speeches and other roles since leaving Downing Street in 2007 yet in 2008 and 2009 he claimed a total of £273,000 in public duty allowances. Mr Blair did not receive any payment last year.
The largest claims for public duty allowance over the past five years are £535,000 from Baroness Thatcher. Sir John Major has been paid a total of £491,000 for public duties in the past five years including £109,000 last year.

It seems there is even a "circuit" for failed Prime Ministers that we the taxpayer are funding. Even though he brought this Country's finances to its knees.

Two greedy ex-Prime Ministers, raking it in long after they did more damage to the intergrity of British Politics and the Economy.

What sad disillusioned masochist would want to sit in on a Gordon Brown lecture???? A towel and a change of clothing would be a must for those on the first two rows.
In all seriousness though such ministerial funding should be stopped if the nation is in such distress... Not for the amount of funding, but for who is receiving it.....The same incompetent, deviants, liars, frauds and smooth talking cheats who allowed the situation we, as a nation are in, to develop and fester.

Ordinary hard working folk struggle with the rising cost of everything and our sick system allows these morons to live a life of luxury with their gold plated pensions and quango's.
£12bn wasted on a computer system that never worked, countless billions lost on the sale of gold and what was left of our manufacturing industry destroyed and gates left open for millions of benefit scrounging migrants.

Thank you for making me laugh at something that makes me hold my head and scream!
I honestly think we don't know half of what goes on within the confines of our Government and financial systems. They are all at it! Even the Councillors in your own areas are doing it. It's sickening to think we know about it and can do nothing. Its all pervasive - like an underground fungi just beneath the surface. The only ones who know about it all are those who are milking the system. It's only occasionally we see it come to the surface.

The worry is that the recently removed New Labour nest of vipers may well have involved British forces with the resultant horrendous, needless casualties in pointless foreign wars, (the effects of which our grandchildren will have to live with) for their own nefarious reasons.
How the likes of Blair and Brown can sleep knowing they have between them and their associated cabinets, knowingly destroyed the resources of the nation, crippling our manufacturing base and flooding the labour market with cheap immigrant workers, running our armed forces down to the point where our Island is virtually defenceless and failing to reverse Thatcher's proposed deconstruction of the NHS.
But we mustn't complain...after all they paid back their expense money they stole from the public purse....didn't they?

Re: GORDON BROWN TOPS UP SALARY - The Sunday Express
On the News tonight, Jon Snow tore Ed Milliband to shreds , if he ever is elected PM then any hope of good Government is gone.!!!! He looked decidedly
ruffled when Snow asked about the £1 million donated to the Labour Party by a non domiciled supporter.
