Plea over Russell Bohling's 'secretive life'
Plea over Russell Bohling's 'secretive life'
Thursday, March 18, 2010
Police are appealing for help to unlock the "secretive life" of a missing East Yorkshire teenager.
Information not already known about 18-year-old Russell Bohling could give officers vital clues to help trace him.
Chief Superintendent Paul Davison, East Riding divisional commander, made the appeal at a press conference in Beverley yesterday.
It is now more than two weeks since Bishop Burton College student Russell, of West Ella, near Kirk Ella, vanished.
Chief Supt Davison said: "Russell is a secretive young lad, as 18-year-olds can be, and does not tell his parents about all his movements.
"He attended college and could have formed new relationships, and there is a possibility somebody could be with him."
Police want to know where Russell was on Saturday, February 27, between 4.35pm and 9.30pm, when he left home in his car and returned without letting his parents known where he had been.
His car's sat nav revealed he had previously travelled to Bradford, York and Bridlington, and police are checking addresses at those destinations.
Chief Supt Davison said: "It is possible that Russell committed suicide or had an accident at Bempton Cliffs, but I would have expected to have found a body by now.
"He has grown in confidence over the past year, passed his driving test and was doing well at college, so had everything to live for."
He added "I want Russell to contact the police in confidence and let us know he is safe and well.
"I would also urge anyone who may be in contact with him, or knows his whereabouts, to contact the police."
Call the police on 0845 6060222.

Missing boy Russel Bohling
Missing: Roger Bohling with a picture of his son Russell, 18, who drove to a cliff-top beauty spot and vanished
The parents of a teenage student who disappeared two months ago believe he has been killed over a £300,000 inheritance.
Russell Bohling, 18, was about to be given a house and cash by his parents to give him 'independence' and help him start his own company, but the teenager disappeared in mysterious circumstances.
The college student, who is described as 'vulnerable' due to a speech disorder, drove to a cliff top nature reserve on the East Yorkshire coast and paid for a day's parking. A massive search involving police, the coastguard, an underwater search unit and the force helicopter failed to find any clues.
Parents Roger and Christine Bohling insist their son would not have killed himself or run away and was 'excited' three days earlier when he discussed with his father plans to use the inheritance to set up a business. The couple said he was 'very happy with his studies and life.'
They fear he may have been killed in a failed abduction attempt linked to the gift he was about to receive, or gone to the beauty spot to meet someone he knew.
Humberside Police are calling in outside help to assess whether to treat Russell's disappearance as murder.
They have also found nothing to indicate suicidal tendencies and would have 'expected to find a body by now' had he fallen from Bempton Cliffs, near Flamborough Head, where his car was parked.
His car's satellite navigation system showed he had previously driven to York, Bridlington and Bradford and detectives have been investigating whether these journeys could shed light on his disappearance.
Russell left his Hull home on Tuesday March 2 to travel to Bishop Burton College, where he was doing a bricklaying course. The student, who had a near perfect attendance record, failed to show for any lessons that day, and his car was found 45 miles away at the cliff reserve.
Mr and Mrs Bohling called a press conference to publicly reveal their fears that Russell had been murdered. Retired civil servant Mr Bohling, 57, said: 'We believe that he met someone he knew and trusted that morning and subsequently lost his life, probably having been murdered by that person.
'Russell deserved to live life to the full and the person responsible for taking him from all those who loved him must be found.
'Someone knows, or strongly suspects, who that person is and we beg you to do the right thing by Russell and make the identity of that person known to the police. Please don't let Russell down.'
Mr Bohling said yesterday he bought three similar properties 15 years ago for Russell and brothers Nigel, 23, and Andrew, 22, which they would all have access to after Russell turned 18. They were all due to receive the house and cash worth a total of £300,000 in the coming months.
He said: 'They could sell them, rent them or live in them. I can't believe he would either leave home or kill himself. Just days before he had been talking in very upbeat manner about the future and his plans to run a company. He had plenty to live for and was about to receive a house and achieve independence.
'Surely if he was just going to run away he would have waited until he got his inheritance?
'I told the boys it would be best to keep the inheritance secret because I didn't want people, you used to call them gold diggers, asking them for money.
'It's possible Russell may have told somebody because it's a big secret for an 18-year-old to keep, but it would have had to have been someone close to him. He had a small circle of very close friends.'
Chief Superintendent Paul Davison, who is heading the inquiry, said: 'This case is a lot more complex than something like a normal murder inquiry. We have to keep a completely open mind.
'There is absolutely nothing to go on other than Russell's car, the finger prints on the parking ticket and the fact he looked a little smarter when he left for college that morning. I am bringing in help to provide an objective perspective.'
He said the case could be upgraded and handed over to a Major Investigation Team.

Police investigating the disappearance of an 18-year-old man are interviewing staff and students at his college as the search for him continues.
Russell Bohling, from West Ella, near Hull, was last seen on 2 March and his car was later found in a car park at Bempton Cliffs, East Yorkshire.
Humberside Police are interviewing staff and students at Bishop Burton College in Beverley.
Mr Bohling's family have said they fear he has been murdered.
They believe he may have been killed by someone who found out he was getting £300,000 from his father for a business.
The bricklaying student's disappearance has been described as "totally out of character".
Police have said they are pursuing the possibility that he could have been a victim of crime.
'Numerous' searches
Det Insp Colin Waddington said: "Our main aim is to find Russell and it is vital the public help with the investigation by calling us with any information connected to him, however small they might consider it.
"As part of ongoing investigations, numerous CCTV inquiries and physical searches have been carried out.
"We will continue to pursue each and every line of inquiry that I believe may assist us in determining exactly what happened to Russell and where he might be."
He said police were particularly keen to establish Mr Bohling's movements on 27 February when he left in his car and returned home without letting his parents know where he had been.
Mr Bohling was known to have visited York, Bradford and Bridlington and police also want to speak to anyone who may have seen him there or know why he had travelled there.
He is described as white, about 5ft 8ins tall with a medium build and short, straight brown hair.
He was last seen leaving for Bishop Burton College wearing a black Ben Sherman jacket, blue jeans and black leather trainers.

Father fears missing son murdered
Police looking for a missing Hull student say no new information has "come to light" since he disappeared one year ago.
Russell Bohling, 19, from West Ella, went missing on 2 March 2010. His car was later discovered at the car park at Bempton Cliffs.
Mr Bohling's family previously said they feared he was murdered as his disappearance was "out of character".
Police said they did not believe Mr Bohling had been the victim of a crime.
They are continuing to appeal for information but are treating the case as a missing person's inquiry.
Insp Colin Waddington, from Humberside Police, said: "A huge amount of police work has gone into the investigation to determine what happened to Russell Bohling and yet nothing at all has come to light that has assisted us in our inquiries."
'£300,000 investment'
Mr Bohling was studying bricklaying at Bishop Burton College in Beverley when he disappeared.
His family said they believed he might have been killed by someone who found out he was getting £300,000 from his father for a business.
At the time Humberside Police conducted land, sea and air searches as well as underground searches around Bempton Cliffs.
Mr Bohling's disappearance was also featured on BBC1's Crimewatch Roadshow.
Police still want to establish Mr Bohling's movements on 27 February 2010 when he left in his car and returned home without letting his parents know where he had been.
Subsequent investigations found he had visited York, Bradford and Bridlington but it is not known why he travelled there.
Insp Waddington said: "If anyone saw anything of Russell a year ago, or spoke to him about his intentions at that time, please contact us and share with us what you know."
