Five British people have been arrested in Málaga for stealing 156,700 litres of diesel from an oil pipeline. Codenamed as ‘Rudolf 2011’, the Guardia Civil are now investigating whether the arrested group are part of a much larger organisation.
In addition to the five arrested by the Guardia, another three people have been indicted as being members of the same group which took the diesel from the pipe as it crosses the province of Málaga.
A statement released on Thursday by the Guardia Civil says that those arrested and indicted are in the majority from the same British family.
Investigations started with the Judicial police working with the Guardia Civil environmental service, Seprona, and the Málaga Guardia Civil at the start of October, when personal from the pipeline infrastructure company noted a reduction in pressure, and has been carried out in several different municipalities of the Guadalhorce Valley.
Finally a finca in Campanillas was discovered to be at the centre of the operation. The first arrest of a British man was made at the finca, who was found controlling the diesel extraction system. The Guardia say the well-coordinated gang took the diesel directly from the pipeline using domestic plumbing techniques, with the final goal of selling the fuel on illegally.
The Guardia Civil also note that much of the diesel has escaped into the ground with the consequential environmental damage.
The rest of the arrests were made on November 8.
The Guardia Civil note that this is the first case of its type in Andalucía, and they continue to investigate whether a larger criminal operation is behind the group.
