How would Gerry know if the kids had cried and gone back to sleep between their checks? And why does he say, "...the next morning," when it's not clear, or they say it's not clear, when it was that Maddie cried?

I totally agree with the comments thus far, particularly the last one.
It jumped out at me, pennylane. Kate and Gerry had been trying to say that they had no idea when the crying episode might have been and then Gerry says, "...the next morning.." What does he mean? The next morning after what? The morning after Mrs Fenn reported the crying? If Madeleine had referred to crying at all, could it have been that morning and not the morning of May 3rd?
