A body found in a canal in an east London river is believed to be missing Crystal Palace raver Andrew Cooke.

The 29-year-old went missing more than four weeks ago.

The body was found yesterday (Tuesday) less than a mile from where Mr Cooke, known as ‘Cookie’ was last seen, leaving a rave at a disused car park in Chingford.

His uncle Brian Cooke said: “I’m afraid the sad news that we were dreading has come. A body has been found in a canal about a mile away from where Andrew was last seen.

“The clothes match the ones he was wearing. Although a formal identification is yet to be done, the police are sure that it is Andrew.

“Andrew is at peace and we at least know where he is and we knew that he would not have walked away from all those he loved.”

There has been a high-profile Facebook campaign to find Mr Cooke, supported by over 5,000 people.

His uncle added: “Thank you for all your kind thoughts, words and for the tremendous work that so many people have put in to finding Andy.”

A Met spokesman said: “Police were called at 2.13pm on to Wharf Road to reports of a body in the water of the River Lee.

“Officers attended the scene and a body of a man has been recovered. Life was pronounced extinct at the scene.

“Officers believe they know the identity of the deceased but await next of kin to be informed.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident.”
