Maddy case must be reopened: Cop who led the botched Portuguese hunt calls on authorities to act

The bungling cop who led the botched Madeleine McCann investigation last night backed calls for the case to be reopened.

Goncarlo [sic] Amaral is being sued by Kate and Gerry McCann after he claimed they were involved in their daughter’s disappearance.

But yesterday the detective sided with the couple – 24 hours after Portuguese authorities refused to reopen the case.

“We were always against the closing of the case,” he said. “It should be reopened.”

He also called for a Crimewatch-style reconstruction of the night the youngster vanished from a Portugal holiday resort in May 2007.

“We need a reconstruction,” said Amaral, who was taken off the case six months after Madeleine vanished.

“This is a fundamental police act which will serve to remove contradictions, inconsistencies and lies.”

Scotland Yard chiefs called on the Portuguese authorities to reopen the five-year-old investigation earlier this week after a British review of 40,000 pieces of information in the case found 195 new leads.

But Kate and Gerry’s hopes of a breakthrough were dashed when senior police chief Pedro do Carmo and Attorney General Fernando Jose Pinto Monteiro ruled out a new probe.

The McCanns’ call for the reopening of the case was echoed by former Scotland Yard murder squad detective Peter Kirkham yesterday who said it was “shameful” the investigation had been shelved.

“It’s not right we should put to bed a murder inquiry or a missing child inquiry. It’s shameful to do that,” he insisted.

“This is not like the vast majority of missing persons inquiries where a teenager or older person has gone missing under their own steam.

“Madeleine did not go missing under her own steam. The bottom line is the case is not solved. We have a British child who’s missing abroad.

“If it has not been resolved we should be continuing to look into it. That should be done on all unsolved cases.”

Aye it’s ‘shameful’ alright. It’s ‘shameful’ that equal measures of human and economic resources has not been afforded to the cases of missing British nationals Ben Needham and Katrice Lee. It’s ‘shameful’ that Drs. McCann and their pals deemed it acceptable to leave young children alone in unlocked apartments whilst dining elsewhere; it’s ‘shameful’ that Drs. McCann pals refused to take part in a reconstruction of the night of May 3rd, when initially requested by the Portuguese investigation team in 2008; it’s ‘shameful’ how the British media and authorities persist in playing down the role of British investigative and consular officials in directing and advising the Portuguese investigation team to focus their attention on the Drs. McCann; It’s ‘shameful’ that Leicestershire Constabulary withheld statements of Drs. Gasper, which detailed inappropriate behaviour of paedophilic nature by Dr. Gerald McCann and Dr. David Payne on a previous family holiday, from the Portuguese investigation for a number of months (5). It’s particularly ‘shameful’ that the, thus far. two million pound review commenced by treating the case as though ‘…abduction occurred in the UK’. And despite that the review team have thus far analysed a mere quarter of the data, the team’s lead, Andy Redwood, concludes that Madeleine was abducted and is a findable little girl.

Agreed , Panda, it's shameful alright.

Newspaper and TV journalists who write and speak garbage like this have no conscience. Telling lies for money shows one of the nastier aspects of human nature. Personally , I would choose to be honest and broke.

I can't see much good in the McCann;s in the way of human traits. They go on a family holiday and Gerry says he is not there to enjoy himself. They leave the children alone every night. When they "lose" Madeleine they don't seem to mind and go jogging and clean out any evidence in 5A and delete their mobile messages, ring everyone and the press b4 the police etc

They then proceded to employ lawyers and set up a Fund, website and a ltd company to raise money on the pretence of searching for Madeleine but hardly any of the income went to searching but to the lawyers who made money for the McCann's by suing newspapers and to the McCann's to pay their mortgage and their general living costs. They refuse to help the police and then slate them...this tells us a great deal about the psychology of the McCann's.

The McCann's have done everything that guilty parents would have done and nothing that honest, caring parents would have done. Only a worm could support such strange, uncaring behaviour.

Morning whatsupdoc, That word "findable" used by Redwood I first heard in one of the McCann T.V. interviews , said by Kate . I thought at the time it was an odd word to use in relation to a child and to see it used again does make you wonder if Redwood has been keeping the McCanns updated on the
Review. I wrote a rambling post early hours of this morning , can't remember which thread commenting on the changes on the way we live now and the
way principles in the way Politicians in Cabinet behave have gone by the Board. I know it sounds selfish but I.m glad I'm not growing up today.
