My utter admiration for the McCanns over the last five restless years
For five years their lives have been a sleepless hell, haunted by nightmares of what might have happened to her that night and ever since
Tomorrow evening Kate and Gerry McCann will go to bed knowing it is exactly five years since they lay down for a peaceful sleep.
For the following evening, May 3, 2007, their four-year-old daughter Madeleine was abducted.
Since then their lives have been a sleepless hell, haunted by nightmares of what might have happened to her that night and ever since.
That’s five years when the rest of us have cracked on with our lives; working, holidaying, laughing, pottering about.
But for the McCanns life has stood still, stuck somewhere on that Algarve coast where everything changed for ever.
I don’t believe we are any closer to knowing who took Madeleine or why than in the first hours after her disappearance, whatever the Met Police reinvestigating old leads might say.
They might have got the files in better order but it seems unlikely the lines of enquiry can lead anywhere, particularly as the Portuguese have no interest in reopening the painful sore of their inept investigation.
“Are they still looking for that girl?” my seven-year-old son asked when he saw the picture of Madeleine in the papers this week.
He was only three when she disappeared but the blanket coverage of her photograph remains firmly imprinted on his mind.
“Yes,” I replied. “Because if you get lost Mummy and Daddy will never, ever stop looking for you.”
I didn’t tell him the other reason; that the night Madeleine disappeared, at the moment she needed them most, her parents weren’t there.
And because of that they are compelled to spend every fibre of their beings trying to make amends.
Five years on some people still find it hard to sympathise with the McCanns because of that one terrible mistake.
But it must be a cold heart that shows no pity for their unending agony even now.
Their fight for their daughter since her disappearance is utterly admirable.

Didn't Kate McCann say on Woman's Hour that after the first 5 days she was sleeping well?

Is this "Mirror" thing a Newspaper or a reincarnation of Mills & Boon?

Now look here, missus.
I, like everyone else here, am quite capable of showing pity by the bucketload.
But I'm saving it for those who deserve it, like the deceased Madeleine.
And her surviving brother and sister - heaven only knows what fate awaits them, courtesy of their parents and their servile cronies.

Ye gods, there seems to be an endless stream of mainly female so-called journalists who really do need to be sent on a refresher course. Is this particular bleeding heart related to Fiona Phillips?!

Re: My utter admiration for the McCanns over the last five restless years/The Mirror
When are these journalists going to realise that to question is not to hate. To question the McCanns version of events is not to hate the McCanns but to want to find the truth for their daughter.
I have plenty of pity for Kate McCann. I pity the path she has chosen and the life she has chosen to live. I pity her for the fact that she cannot find it in herself to do the right thing for her daughter. None of that pity helps to find a lost little girl.
The day I see a campaign to have the case re-opened, a campaign along the lines of the infamous look into my eye campaign, that is the day I just might start to question myself and my thoughts about what happened.
Where are the t-shirts Gerry ? Come on - we have Champions League final, FA Cup Final, indeed the Olympics and European Champs all comming up. Will there be a short video shown at any of these events campaigning to have the case re-opened ? Lets shame the mean, un-caring, inept PJ into re-opening the case.
We could even get newly designed good quality wrist-bands. It would be nice to have a change of slogan and design.
No t-shirts, no wrist bands, no re-opening campaign ? Thought not. Pity.

Her 'utter admiration' for what? A pair of self confessed child neglectors?
I'll save my admiration for Madeleine, a beautiful little girl who was let down by her parents night after night.

Another poor suffering Kate and Gerry article......what about poor Madeleine? I don't see any mention there of what that child must have suffered left alone with two even younger children night after night. So flying round the world by private jet or first class at other peoples expense is suffering is it? Leaving everyone else to do the actual searching for the child, having your highlights done, jogging, being dolled up for photo calls, being feted as celebrities and raking in money hand over fist is suffering is it?
When oh when is someone out there going to have the guts and the honesty to say that the only reason Madeleine is missing (if anyone is to believe the abduction story) is because of the parents neglect, no other reason at all and neglecting parents are not to be pitied by anyone, it is the neglected children who are to be pitied.

Re: My utter admiration for the McCanns over the last five restless years/The Mirror
The McCanns are just a pair of very dodgy child neglectors, with a thoroughly rancid, ever morphing story of how three year old Maddie disappeared off the face of the earth.
I would like to offer my utter admiration for Tony Bennett and Goncalo Amaral. Two men who fought against injustice, and would not be bullied or bribed into submission by the McCanns and their high priced team. Unlike our corrupt journalists and those from the Met undertaking this (so called) Review!

Mara thon, I have said that so many times. This whole "story" is about Kate and Gerry. Everything is billed as "Kate and Gerry AND their continuting hunt for their missing daughter". She is always last, always was and always will be.
We have a flurry of articles about Kate and Gerry, in the aftermath of DCI's Redwood's comments about Madeleine possibly being alive. Somebody point me in the direction of just one article that has since been written asking how Madeleine might feel today, what she has gone through over the past five years, indeed how would she feel if SY arrived at her front door to return her "home". Who stops to think that "home" is not her home anymore ? All she knows now is what she has done for the past five years.
If Madeleine is believed to be alive surely they are the questions that should be asked. No, then the article will not be about Kate and Gerry, it would be about Madeleine. We cannot have that now, can we.
They are on Lorraine Kelly tomorrow morning for anyone brave enough to stomach it.
