A TELEVISION documentary last week detailed the alarmingly inadequate efforts of Portuguese police investigating the disappearance of little Madeleine McCann.
She disappeared on the evening of May 3, 2007, a few days before her fourth birthday.
The incompetence of the local police is one thing, but the malice they have shown towards grieving parents Kate and Gerry McCann is inhuman.
The documentary revealed that even today the Policia Judiciaria assume the McCanns are in some way involved in the disappearance of their daughter.
That suits them, of course. They can, and have, moved on. So, too, has the Portuguese population who, polls show, agree with their police that Madeleine's parents are hiding the true story.
One can only imagine that Portugal, one of Europe's poorest countries - even Greece is wealthier - so wishes to protect its tourism industry that it is prepared to torture the McCanns rather than get to the bottom of the crime.
So who is guilty?
The documentary makers avoided this ugly aspect of the story.
From day one private investigators hired by the McCanns have focused on the probability the girl was abducted by a ring of paedophiles.
Indeed, one of the detective agencies they engaged exposed just such an organisation after receiving an anonymous call claiming Madeleine appeared in a pornographic video being distributed on the internet.
It wasn't her, but with the video evidence police staged co-ordinated raids across Europe leading to 13 arrests with another 10 people questioned about making child pornography.
That alone reveals the truth about child pornography and why it must be taken seriously.
Anyone downloading child pornography commits a crime. But they also become an accessory to the primary offence in which a young child has been criminally assaulted.
Country Court Judge Roy Punshon set it out clearly when sentencing schoolteacher Ian Wayne Tucker who had collected 16,000 pornographic pictures and videos of children.
"Too often these crafty criminals are able to persuade judges that they should not be jailed. I'd jail every one of them".
"The nature of the offending is very serious," Judge Punshon said. "Viewing and trafficking in child pornography creates a market that leads to the exploitation of children."
Tucker was generously sentenced to only 15 months jail.
Teaching is among the most trusted of professions and, as we have seen with so many Catholic priests, can be targeted by paedophiles and perverts because of the almost unfettered access to children it provides.
The Victorian Institute of Teaching is the government body that registers teachers, and it has done a terrific job since 2003 in rooting out sexual deviants in teacher ranks.
The VIT holds no inquests, tests no evidence, accepts no mitigating circumstance and listens to no appeals. If you are convicted or found guilty of a sexual offence involving a child the institute "is required to cancel the registration of a teacher". End of story.
And you can see for yourself the end to 56 teachers' stories at the VIT website under "non-discretionary cancellations".
I LIKE the idea that the VIT's decision is inflexible and final - because paedophiles are the most devious and manipulative members of our community.
You may be surprised to see that 18 of the 56 teachers on the VIT list had hordes of child pornography at home.
Too often these crafty criminals are able to persuade judges that they should not be jailed. I'd jail every one of them.
I have written before about loathsome Brighton Grammar history teacher John Newton Hewitt who was found to have 155 explicit videos and 266 images depicting child pornography, with kids as young as four, on his computer.
Hewitt didn't care for the little kids being abused on his behalf. He gladly downloaded their fate. Perhaps they were later murdered. Did Hewitt care?
It was said that he turned to child pornography during a mid-life crisis at a time his wife had left him. Sensible girl.
He walked free on a bond. Fined, but sentence suspended.
A few days ago former Greensborough Secondary College teacher Henry Redden, found with 8000 images of child pornography, walked free paying a $2000 bond.
Redden had turned to child pornography after struggling with his sexual identity. County Court Judge Howard Mason accused him of "a violation of a moral obligation to humanity".
Madeleine McCann is probably dead. The likes of Hewitt and Redden may well have effectively killed her.

Re: The deadly price of our porn teachers
I rather think the PJ did somewhat more than "assume" Healy & McCann were involved: Amongst many, many other pieces of Evidence and Intelligence, one could "ask the Dogs".

Until Mark Harrison arrived from the UK, walked the routes an abductor might have taken and evaluated the evidence, the PJ were still looking for an abductor. Mark Harrison suggested bringing in Eddie and Keela and told the PJ they should be looking for a body.
Re: The deadly price of our porn teachers
That is what the media should be printing instead of running down the PJ, it was the English police who felt the couple may be implicated in addition to the PJ feeling that the stories didnt add up and their behaivour was rather odd to say the least.

Re: The deadly price of our porn teachers
this man makes me spit. which is awful. why is he reporting this, what axe does he have to grind with the PJ, the first people any police force should look at is the family, oh sorry not if youve got an Ambassador breathing down your neck, you have to wait for the Leicester police to arrive and point the finger so as not to upset too many diplomats. They should have been looked at, they were the last people to see Madeleine allegedly.
jimo
just to add on that bit about pornography, and paedophiles, he says that Madeleine is probably dead, well a carter ruck letter on its way again, and who suggested she had been taken by paedophiles?

Re: The deadly price of our porn teachers
What the hell has that teacher and his conviction got to do with a documentary into Madeleine's disappearance and the xenophobic attack on Portugal?
That reporter ought to be ashamed of himself that's got to be the most tenuous link ever..... No, there isn't even a link!
