The German military will in future be able to use its weapons on German streets in an extreme situation, the Federal Constitutional Court says.
The ruling says the armed forces can be deployed only if Germany faces an assault of "catastrophic proportions", but not to control demonstrations.
The decision to deploy forces must be approved by the federal government.
Severe restrictions on military deployments were set down in the German constitution after Nazi-era abuses.
The court says the military still cannot shoot down a hijacked passenger plane - fighter jets would have to intercept the plane and fire warning shots to force it to land.
After World War II the new constitution ruled that soldiers could not be deployed with guns at the ready on German soil, the BBC's Stephen Evans reports from Berlin.
The court has now changed that, saying troops could be used to tackle an assault that threatens scores of casualties.
The judges had in mind a terrorist incident involving armed attackers in public places.
German troops have been deployed abroad since the war, but it has been a gradual process.
German warplanes have been used in the Balkans and troops are on the ground in Afghanistan, protecting construction workers, but able to return fire if attacked.

Panda that is interesting, considering that in the US, DHS has ordered massive amounts of ammunition and body armour.

The Department of Homeland Security has redacted information relating to the quantity of bullets it is buying following a controversy concerning the agency’s purchase of over a billion rounds of ammo, which many fear is a sign the federal government is preparing for civil unrest in the United States.
Despite the fact that documents are only supposed to be redacted if authorized by Congress or for national security reasons, a solicitation posted on the FedBizOpps website yesterday concerning ammunition purchases made by the DHS on behalf of Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) contains numerous blacked out sections.
The classified portions of the document include references to the amount of 223 62 and 223 64 grain ammunition being purchased......
.....................The DHS’ decision back in March to purchase of 450 million rounds of .40-caliber hollow point bullets that are designed to expand upon entry and cause maximum organ damage prompted questions as to why the federal agency required such powerful bullets and in such large quantities merely for training purposes.
This was followed up by a more recent order for a further 750 million rounds of assorted ammunition, including bullets that can penetrate walls.
Given the fact that the DHS is also acquiring riot gear in preparation for civil unrest which could take place at the upcoming DNC, RNC and presidential inauguration, the purchase of ammunition in such massive numbers has stoked fears that the federal government could be preparing to use force against the American people.

I didn't know German troops are protecting interests in Afghanistan , that should be enough for Germany to change its stance, plus the fact that although Germany does not presently have money worries, if the Euro collapses who knows what effect it will have worldwide.

Big effect worldwide I think. And things are happening worldwide: China will not buy any more US stock; George Soros is selling all his investments and putting his money into gold, which should tell us something.

The whole of the Middle East is a cauldron , Africa affected now, Europe in crisis Israel threatening Iran .....the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, flooding and drought, all the ingredients for a catastrophe.
George Soros is moving to Singapore with his 40 yr old Girl Friend (he is 82) yet another billionaire tax dodger.
