No, I suspect they cannot face the outcry and opprobrium that setting foot (in the public gaze) in Portugal would create.
Morning TEIN,
They didn't withdraw the case because they wanted to wipe out Goncalo Amaral emotionally and tie him up legally for as long as possible after they lost the last trial! They needed to release Kate's book and to stockpile some more money before their fortunes changed. They want Goncalo totally destroyed... for a number of reasons.
In the UK, that would be called Vexatious Litigation and wouldn't get as far as a Hearing. I'm not familiar with the Portuguese system, but I'd be surprised if they don't have similar provisions.
Anyway, no matter - It will blow up in their smug faces soon enough.
Vexatious Litigation is exactly what the McCanns have been bombarding Dr Amaral with in an attempt to bleed him dry and break his spirit, and I'm absolutely certain he is 100% aware of that. For whatever reason he has chosen to fight on in the face of such a poisonous enemy, and perhaps in the final analysis Dr Amaral will win substantial damages? My heart goes out to him, and I pray for him to win big, and be totally vindicated.
And so say all of us

Well they don't need to be in Portugal to be arrested if the Libel Case leads to disclosure of information giving grounds for further direct Police involvement: We have European Arrest Warrants to cover that.
I imagine SY would be only too happy to provide an escort.

I would imagine cass, whoever's backside they are covering must hold or held very high office and have done something really obscene. A frolicking prince who will never become king is little more than a week's headline snatcher that has probably been used to bury some really bad news. The only person really hurt by his flashing was the queen, in my opinion.cass wrote:prince harry was on every paper front page with his vagas flash --- royal -- the mcanns so protected i alway lived in the hope the would let rip one day --- what have these mcanns and tapas got that royals havent re the press ? never has a couple been so protected ever

quote....Any payout will be spent entirely on the continuing global search for Maddie, the couple said....unquote
Presumably they are saying that the multi million pound review by NSY has also led nowhere. Why do they need this money when the tax payer, via the government, is also funding them?

SY are conducting a paper-chase Review, not engaging in a Search.
In that respect, they do have something in common with Healy & McCann >>>>> The latter have not contributed anything meaningful to "the Search" either.
The other thing they have in common is knowing that the reason for not actually Searching is because it would be like chasing smoke.

Re: MCCANNS WILL MISS COP’S TRIAL/Daily Star
The shyster who wrote this tripe didn't even have the bottle to put his/her name to it. And back to the disgraced cop again - why can't they just print facts. Facts cannot get them CRooked, but like the people they support in this tragedy, they're cowards.
This is TM's chance to go face to face and dispute every point in the book and they cannot face Dr Amaral. I wonder why. What worries me is even if/when Dr Amaral wins it will be spun in Tm favour like the crap we've had to put up with for the last 5 years. All imo.
With all the dodgy dealings behind the scenes we just don't know what will happen next. I live in hope for justice.

Re: MCCANNS WILL MISS COP’S TRIAL/Daily Star
I cannot decided if this case came to fruition as a result of bad legal advice or the usual arrogance of the McCann group.
However, it has all gone pear shaped for them. I think the initial idea was firstly to shut Amaral up, ensure he never again speaks or writes a single word about this and secondly get a few hundred thousand pounds thrown into the begging bowl by way of an out of court settlement. They hoped that Amaral would make an offer of payment and part of their acceptance would be to have him undertake to never again speak about them.
I don't think they banked on Amaral going all the way.
If Amaral wins this case the consequnces are far more serious for Healy and McCann than a simple matter of his book going viral and them being out of pocket by a few million. It endorses Amaral's right to freely discuss what he learned during his time as investigator on the case.
On the other hand, if there is no justice in this world and they win, they cannot clear Mr Amaral's mind of what he knows about them and what they did. Nothing can take that away. A scary position to be in for Healy and McCann.
That is what they fear. They fear Amarals knowledge and win or loose his knowledge is his to keep.
They might be financially better off at the end of this trial, but they cannot win it in the moral sense. Amaral will sleep at night knowing he did his job as an investigator to the best of his ability. Pity the McCanns cannot say the same about their job as parents.

Re: MCCANNS WILL MISS COP’S TRIAL/Daily Star
Just read a page from the bewk on Twitter where KMC states that she had to go to the hearing in December 2010? to face Dr Amaral. She wanted to see the whites of his eyes! They had to go for Maddie's sake she said. So what's changed now? Never searched and now can't even be bothered to turn up and see/feel Dr A's fear!
She can forgive the 'abductor' but not the policeman who has had his life and his family's life totally ruined. He must rue the day he ever heard of this family. God moves in mysterious ways and He is surely testing everyone's patience! Roll on January and let's have justice at long last. If we're all shattered by this delay how the hell does Dr A cope.

Re: MCCANNS WILL MISS COP’S TRIAL/Daily Star
The latest delay at least gives sufficient pause for the Plaintiffs to find a "plausible" reason for withdrawing the Case.
The allegations are patently designed to cause stress and harm to Amaral and to further obfuscate and hinder the "search for Madeleine", but there seems to be little public support for their actions - and even through their veil of arrogance surely they must be aware of the increasing backlash against their seemingly endless need to pursue litigation. A somewhat skewed sense of priorities - one explanation for which could be that it deflects attention from what really matters >>>>> FINDING OUT WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO MADELEINE.
PS: I am most definitely not a Paediatrician
