Re: US PRESIDENTAL ELECTIONS
It is scary, even after 160 or so years the opinions, feelings and beliefs of vast areas and population numbers have barely changed, this is despite their civil war, world wars, legislation and education.Claudia79 wrote:
Isn't it scary? I could hardly believe those maps. They were posted by a Portuguese journalist on Twitter.
Our forced integration policy stands every chance of working then....

Reading some of the comments they'll likely get the 25,000 signatures, Anna.AnnaEsse wrote:Louisiana is petitioning to secede from the union. They need 25,000 signatures by December 7th.

Re: US PRESIDENTAL ELECTIONS
After the re-election of Obama there have been many tweets (from college students especially) calling him the N word, a monkey and even saying that the South 'had to rise again'...

Are we seeing what may be the future here in the UK?

I don't think so.
Historically, it's very different. Some places in the US haven't exited the middle ages civilization wise. Racism exists everywhere. Stupidity and prejudice exist everywhere. But in some places in the US it's almost endemic. Like history hasn't caught up with them yet.

I hope your're right Claudia but U.S. style, 'gang and turf war cultures' are pretty well established in many of our cities, right down to their clothes and slang.

I know what you mean. But I think that situation is different from culture rooted racism. There's a kind of racism/xenophobia which comes to light in times of recession. Not that it's less dangerous (let's not forget how Hitler reached power...) but I still think it's quite different. In Portugal there is also racism, of course. It exists everywhere. But as we have always been a people who have emigrated to find better lives elsewhere we took it very well when others started choosing our country to find a better life for themselves. Even our colonialism was a bit different from others. We 'mingled'. The Brazilians have a saying which states the best Portuguese invention was the 'mulata'.

I don't know how easy it was for paper ballots to be fixed, but these voting machines seem to make fraud easy. What we are seeing now is that in some places over 100% of those eligible to vote, voted. Some people were boasting on Twitter about voting multiple times.

I think that there will always be talk of fraud during elections and there will always be people trying to break the rules but in my opinion the numbers of real fraud are insignificant, at least here in Europe and in the US. Winners will always accept the results of election and losers will always question them, especially when the numbers are close. The problem with the US is that the system itself can and should be questioned. It wasn't the case with the Obama re-election but it happened with Bush when he won the election with less popular votes than his opponent. That is, in fact, unbelievable. The electoral college system has to be transformed.
