The former Royal Ballet star was ridiculed by viewers after her first appearance on the show, in which she repeatedly used the word “Yah”.
Bussell put the verbal tic down to her nerves and said she soon stopped it when shown a video of the first episode of the series.
“Oh yes, my fabulous ‘yeaahhh, yaa’” she said. “I think it was nerves and also I think when I coach dancers I want them to communicate with me so I kept expecting a response.
“But Strictly couples don’t say anything and I found that very strange to begin with. I think with one person I must have said about six yas. I think it was Victoria (Pendleton, the cyclist).
“She started crying and I knew she wasn’t listening so I just went on more and more.”

Bussell disclosed that the entire judging panel had a “crush” on Louis Smith, the Olympic gymnast and one of the favourites to win the show.
And she claimed that some of the show’s biggest fans were from the world of ballet, who envied the contestants’ sparse and “tacky” costumes.
“I believe in how dance lifts you and makes you feel,” she told the Daily Telegraph Review.
“It’s really tough for the average person who works in front of a computer if they don’t go to dance classes. If you don’t move, there something wrong with you.”
