A MOTHER whose son was wrongly linked to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has hit out at the way he is portrayed in a best-selling book about the mystery.
Briton Robert Murat was cleared of any involvement in the case four years ago but Kate McCann’s book Madelaine, about her missing daughter, has brought back painful memories for Jenny Murat, 76.
Having seen the McCanns’ suffering at the hands of the British press highlighted in last week’s Leveson report, she is anxious to stress her son’s total innocence.
She and Robert had hoped their nightmare would end in 2008 when he won £600,000 damages from British newspapers, but last night at her home on the Algarve, Mrs Murat spoke of how still the “tragedy consumes us, day in, day out”.
The widow and former nurse said: “Kate of all people should know what it is like to be wrongly accused, so how can she be comfortable repeating wrong allegations about my son in her book?”
In the book published last summer, Kate wrote: “Two officers talked openly about Robert Murat, who remained an arguido [suspect] and drip-fed us snippets of ‘evidence’ linking him to Madeleine.”

However, later in the book she writes: “Nothing we were told by the police indicated Murat took Madeleine or was in any way involved in her abduction.” Mrs Murat argues: “Surely it would have been wiser not to mention the allegations from the outset if there was ‘nothing relevant’.”
The police spotlight fell on Robert 11 days after Madeleine vanished from the McCanns’ holiday apartment in Praia de Luz, Portugal in May 2007.
Mrs Murat said: “Robert was at my home throughout that night and thankfully that is now fully accepted as fact. He did not leave once.”
She feels Robert, too, should have been called to give evidence to the Leveson inquiry.

She explained: “Again we were denied an opportunity to put our side of the story. Robert was the subject of a most disgraceful character assassination, yet was not even invited to contribute to the debate. His life has been hugely damaged. This tragedy consumes us, day in, day out.
She added: “Kate’s book and the resulting publicity did not help. I do feel sympathetic towards the McCanns and obviously wish they could find their daughter. We can’t fathom the hell they must go through but they seem oblivious to the impact all this has had on our lives and the lives of others.
“We tried our best to help, but have ended being pilloried and abused and still it goes on.”
Mrs Murat, now working on her own book about the case, added: “I am sick of all the half-truths and innuendos, so I do want a full and accurate record of the truth. It is important that our story is told.”

The article is in the Express as well:
http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/361930/Jenny-Murat-Kate-McCann-printed-such-awful-things-about-my-Robert-in-her-Madeleine-book
This article certainly does not paint Kate McCann in a good light.

Oh dear! I think the press may be biting back already. I thought this might happen but not so soon. The McCanns have bitten all the hands that fed them for so long: Cameron and the newspapers that were willing to put favourable stories on their front pages. It's not so long ago that we would be waiting on Saturday night to see what was on the Sunday front pages. I think the press will now go with what they can print that is factually correct, like this Murat story, that they cannot be sued for. Now we want one of them to print the Gasper statements.
Re: JENNY MURAT: KATE MCCANN PRINTED SUCH AWFUL THINGS ABOUT MY ROBERT IN HER MADELEINE BOOK
Good for Jenny Murat...I have always wondered when this family would speak out. ..after all they were treated really badly by all concerned.
Perhaps they feel enough is enough and the time to speak is now. Lets hope they are not the only ones.

Well now, what an interesting Sunday morning this has turned out to be.
Two negative articles on the same day!
Firstly, good on Jenny Murat - what she has had to put up with these past five years doesn't bear thinking about.
Secondly, well done Express - more articles like this please!
And to other newspapers - the Express has set a hare running - are you going to run with it?
I hope so - we've all had enough of treacly McCann sycophancy. C'mon now guys, carpe diem!
Thirdly, as always, what interests me is the timing.
Post-Leveson Report and all the whinging and whining that went with it from The Usual Suspects.
If payback time is beginning, I might even start to buy newspapers again (after five years of boycotting).

How refreshing, a newly written McCann story, not something re-hashed from the past.
Where is Clarrie btw ? He is very quiet. If the press get their finger out he won't be able to tell the difference between Rothley Towers and the Costa Concordia.

And just to top the morning off, Human rights solicitor Shami Chakrabarti (those in the UK will know who she is) has said that implementing the whole of Leverson recommendations would be illegal as it is against human rights.

And let's not forget Jane Tanner who pointed the finger at Robert Murat. She said she recognised him from the way he walked. And what about that little group of them who faced Robert and accused him? Shaking in the shoes in a few households?

Two very good points raised here
1) by Mrs Murat as that is a very good point considering the MCcann's recent stance and
2) I agree with Cass, it does appear the press are hitting back...
I was really surprised that the Mccann's were going after the press considering all the neutral coverage that they have had for such a long time.
Although Richard Desmond hinted as to his opinion about the mccann's during his interview, so really we were waiting for this!!
Its even better that its in the Sunday express as the sunday paper is traditionally where the break the biggest stories to get the bigger readership!
I hope they start working through Kates Book thoroughly and compare it with other 'facts'!

Interesting question!
What puzzles me is why Robert Murat has never sued the McCanns or their friends for what they said about him.

Someone I know sent an e-mail to the Sunday Express congratulating them for the first time reporting on Mrs. Murat and suggested they might want to track down Hewitt's Partner to apologise for the reporting about him which was untrue .
HEWLETT WAS INVESTIGATED AND CLEARED AND THE McCANNS KNEW THIS BUT MADE NO ATTEMPT TO SET THE REPORT STRAIGHT.
Now Hewlett is dead he cannot defend himself . This is why the Tabloid Press in particular needs to verify the source before printing news.
I will let you know if the DE reply.

In March 2008 the Express Newspapers were 'gagged'. From McCannfiles there is an entry on this which is interesting considering that the settlement which was agreed that month was a mere 550.000,00. Interesting to see that much higher numbers were fielded earlier. I also seem to remember that the bad press they got was allowed to go on in order to extract higher settlements - but must say that I haven't seen a clear statement to that effect.
(courtesy McCannfiles)
First news of action against The Express Group, 05 March 2008
Private Eye - UK satirical magazine (paper edition)
Richard "Dirty" Desmond called in at the Oscars in LA on his way back from hawking OK! magazine around Australia, bringing along his top snapper to record the great man rubbing shoulders with Hollywood's finest.
But pressing the flesh with Elton John and other celebrities was not a pleasure he wished to share with his senior sidekick Martin "Rottweiler" Ellice - who was told to go back to head office in London and deal with the small matter of his titles being sued by the McCann family for all the rubbish stories they have carried since last year, many of which suggested - without any justification - that the parents might have killed their own child.
Although Dirty Des's lawyers offered £250,000 in an attempt to settle quickly, the McCanns declined and insisted on £1m per newspaper - a total of £4m, covering the daily and Sunday versions of the Express and Star. Outside legal experts consulted by Desmond have reported back to him: "You're f*cked."
That should, of course, be "Carter-F*cked" - for Kate and Gerry McCann have indeed turned to Britain's most aggressive libel lawyers in their attempt to stem the flow of nonsense written about them.
The bad news: The DE pulling their articles was nothing to do with progress in the investigation.
The good news: The Mcs have hired Peter Carter-Ruck and Partners. For those who don't know, this means they are really desperate.

Desmond paid only £600,000, the McCanns greed knows no bounds though does it hoping for E 1 million from Amaral . It's not as if they needed the money for employing Top line Detectives, the few they (Kennedy) employed were either specialists in money laundering or retired Detectives who didn't have a clue.£200,000 from the Sun for serialisation of Kate's book, an enhanced advance from Transworld, yet the Fund only gets the Royalties.

Hi, I'm forever correcting the 'Advance' believe me, it is an 'advance on royalties' basically a bet by the publishers that they're going to clear this amount, say one or two million. It's a risk for the publisher but Transworld must have thought they'd make a mint with the McCanns being so well known. I doubt that this has happened.
I well remember the Swedish interview last year where Kate says: 'Please buy my book....'
Once the income from the book has topped the advance, the remaining royalties will be paid on a regular basis. Usually yearly. With most books this doesn't tend to last very long as the publisher just sells the left-overs to firms who specialise in 'remainders' at a bargain price. As the royalty on a book is a percentage of the wholesale price it can end up being very low indeed.
There's simply no point in a publisher hanging on to copies in the hope the sales will pick up.
Desmond paid 550,000,- to the McCanns, Murat got 600,000,- plus his two friends got 100,000.- each. But that was when he sued a total of 10 or 12 newspapers who each paid about 50,000.- . I think the case was a first in legal history in GB.
I don't like Murat one bit, but I'm sure he 'helped' after the fact. Imo he certainly knows more or less what happened but he certainly didn't expect to be the patsy for the faked abduction imo. That must have come as a total surprise.
Don't forget he said it was the biggest .....-up in history. For that to be the case there had to be something planned which went wrong. Imo of course.
He certainly should have been at the Leveson (the papers printed unbelievably vile and spurious details about his sex life) and the McCanns had no business being there at all.
