A brilliant article and unfortunately 100% on the money. The reason Great Britain didn't have a revolution - when over a period of 50 years most European countries had one - is due to the individual landowners. It was absolutely not in their interest to rock the boat and I believe the regimental structure of the army also played a part in this.
I'm happy to be put right about this if I'm wrong. I'ts just occurred to me that the structure of society then, with landed gentry raising the local regiments which had a strong sense of loyalty to their part of the country, may have been very much like Bronze and Iron Age 'communities' in their aims and structure.
