Apprenticeships overhaul to offer school-leavers way into professions
without university degree
School-leavers will be able to become accountants, airline pilots and join
other professions without a university degree under an overhaul of
apprenticeships expected next week.
Ministers hope that
apprenticeships will eventually acquire the same prestige as degrees in the eyes

Ministers will announce measures intended to raise the standing of vocational
training to make it a credible alternative to university.
The Telegraph disclosed last year that ministers wanted to create
higher-level apprenticeships with the same value as degrees and postgraduate
qualifications. The necessary regulations will be published next week, and a
number of big companies will detail plans to offer such training.
PWC, the financial services firm, has developed a “masters-level”
apprenticeship which will let those completing it become chartered accountants.
There will be degree-level apprenticeships in commercial airline piloting and
engineering.
Matthew Hancock, the skills minister, said: “The Government is sending a
clear signal that practical learning is a viable route to the professions.”
Some recruiters believe the rising cost of a university degree may make
apprenticeships more attractive. The number of 18-year-olds heading to
university fell by 57,000 last autumn.

Student Loans the next bid debt bubble when we realise how much is
outstanding and how little is paid back.
Bring back trainee posts in most
areas with day release, HNCs, HNDs etc. leading to a degree if desired.
Get
apprenticeships back to a situation where you were allocated to someone who was
experienced and passed on that experience over a number of years.
The
increase in university student numbers in recent years has just been yet another
way of hiding the true unemployment figures n this
country.

Absolutely. I got my qualifications in Quality Assurance through attending
Bristol Poly every Monday evening for 2 years whilst at the same time being
employed and earning money. Now employers want people with university degrees.
Rediculous waste of time and money and totally
unnecessary.

About time some sense was put back into the system for the young.
All the 'everyone goes to uni' crap was nothing more than a
Upper-clas-twit-Blairite experiment.
Hopefully the schools will take note and kids will be able to leave at 16
being able to read & write, do sums and speak some sort of English
coherently

Quite the reverse, it was pressure from those families which had never had a
university graduate who wanted to be as good as everyone else. Purely fashion
and one up on the neighbours. Naturally, a populist, opportunist, socialist
politician would play up to the desire even if it was detrimental to the
country.

Patient to young heart surgeon - I do hope you know what you are doing? -
Reply - I always helped my dad in his butchers shop!

These are some of the comments....it appears the Education Minister has once again proved his competence , studying Plato at UNI is not necessarily going to get you a job and unpaid Student Loans are enormous.!!

Id rather be operated on by a butchers' son who grew up helping his dad,, than a graduate straight from medical school. The butchers lad is more likely to know what he's doing.

Iris, Engineering Firms are crying out for skilled staff and if and when the economy improves more skilled workers will be needed. I think it was Tony Blair who offered Firms £70 a week to take on apprentices, think of all the worthwhile jobs youngsters would be able to do instead of languishing on the dole and getting into trouble. Where is the forward thinking of this Government , they could even get the Banks to sponsor Apprentices as a goodwill gesture for the havoc they have caused the World.
