mccannsBen Delicious reports from London: The McCanns are back. God help us all.
Just when you thought they were gone, they have returned. This time the double act has been revived by the report from Scotland Yard that has been investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in Algarve in 2007 when her parents were having dinner with their friends in a near-by eatery.
Yep, in case you’ve forgotten, 4-year-old Maddy – she was actually turning four at the time – and her younger twin sister and brother were left alone while their parents had some fun, having refused the services of a nanny that was offered to them. Child neglect you say? Well, yes, but it’s water under the bridge now.
Anyway, it seems that the boys from Scotland Yard have come up with a few names that they think might be ‘of interest to the investigation’. (Could it be that Gerry and Kate are on that list? Just joking, of course. they are above all suspicion.) No one is talking about suspects actually but hacks have already gone into an overdrive and are banging on about ‘around 20 possible suspects’ who may have snatched Maddy. That’s modern journalism for you: do anything to squeeze a sensation out of a story.
But imagine the excitement in the McCann household when they’ve heard about the ‘new leads’ uncovered by the Scotland Yard investigation that was started on orders of PM David Cameron himself in 2011. What an opportunity to remind the world that they are still there, not losing hope that they daughter could still be alive.
So now the British boys in blue are asking the Portuguese authorities to check the new information. Unfortunately, the Portuguese top prosecutor is not really showing any desire to reopen the case of Madeleine McCann, as he seems to think everything possible has been done already. So that you know, it is a criminal offence in Portugal to leave children under the age of 10 unsupervised. So we may conclude that the cops in Portugal think they’ve already did the McCanns a big favour by not getting them banged up in the slammer.
madeleine mccannThe thing about this whole tragic story is that the elder McCanns seem not to understand that they look a tad odd, having left their kids all by themselves, and when suspicion fell on them that they might have actually been involved in their daughter’s disappearance, got all offended and upset. If they did the same thing in Britain, wouldn’t the social services be on to them, taking their twins into care? Parents have lost custody of their children for lesser offences in the past. But as it was Portugal and the local cops were not keen on dragging themselves into a political row with Britain somehow the McCanns got away with what they did and even became victims of ‘continental injustice’.
Look, no one is against Maddy turning up alive. But this whole affair has a lot of nastiness about it. And that is why the McCanns are getting hard hit every time they raise their heads above the parapet, so to speak. Have only themselves to blame really.
