Re: the case passed back to portugal??
Cameron is in enough trouble as it is, his backbenchers , Rebekah Brooks...his "Friend" up for Trial in Spetember, now the ignomy that he allowed himself to be taken in by the McCanns into spending £4.25 million with nothing to show for it. If SY had come up with definite proof of the McCanns involvement in Madeleine's disappearance , he would be even more redfaced.

Re: the case passed back to portugal??
Great points Jean.
IMO, he wasn't quite up to speed with Tanner's "sighting" - the sighting it took her a day to tell them about (???)
Jane Tanner clearly said she saw a man (egg/spotty - take your pick) carrying a child. She described the pyjamas and said about no socks on the child's feet. So it WAS a child Gerry, not "probably" a child
He meant to say "Carrying a child, probably Madeleine". Early days and not quite up to speed with the fabricated story.

"around, er, the time that Madeleine, er, was found to be missing shortly before that there was a suspect, (er?) seen walking away from the apartment, er, with, (big intake of breath) erm, PROBABLY CARRYING A CHILD"
If it wasn't a CHILD, then what was it the 'suspect' was PROBABLY carrying?

Re: the case passed back to portugal??
Panda I don't think Cameron has anything to gain by NOT finding out what happened to Madeleine. I know for definite that he knows TM's account is very odd indeed and is dubious. The friendship with La Brooks shouldn't be overplayed. He has nothing to gain from a cover up for something that happened on Labour's watch... He would certainly gain kudos if he allowed and agreed payment for investigations to take place which eventually cracked the case. I know you think no more money should be spent on it... nor do, I unless SY are allowed to act (together with the PJ it would have to be this time) as they would have done if this were a case in England and clear the ground forom under their feet first... ie do the who saw her last, who saw her last outside the family group, when and where, and establish a proper timeline for what happened on the evening of her disappearance.
