A few questions about that initial 'search'...

Given Kate was certain Madeleine had been 'taken', what with the jemmied shutters and open window, why did they spend 40 minutes searching for her before calling the police?
Since Madeleine could have been 'taken' immediately after Matt's 'check' 29 minutes earlier what were they searching for? what did they hope they'd find?
Did I read somewhere that Gerry was searching in bins?
If they hoped Madeleine had left the apartment by herself, how did they think she'd got out?
If they were certain Madeleine would not have left the apartment on her own, how did they think she got out?
