Scotland Yard are equal opportunities investigators!
Re: Anorak: Finally We Get A Black Suspect (And He’s Dead)
The more I see this sh*te the more I think the PJ have put it out there to keep the papers busy while they do their REAL investigation - of a pedophile ring, of the Smith sighting (they've been up and down the road where Smith sighting was made, for days, according to locals).
Mr Rodrigues said police were called after Monteiro was accused of stealing tips. He was searched, but nothing was found and he protested his innocence.
Later an officer for Portugal’s national guard took the staff to one side and warned them about Monteiro. Mr Rodrigues recalled: “The officer told us, ‘We know him, you can’t trust that man’. They said he’d been in trouble in the past for drug offences. “That’s the last time he worked at the Ocean Club. I never saw him again.”
Until now…
What other evidence?
He was living in Lagos, a 15-minute drive from Praia da Luz, when Madeleine disappeared. British expat, George Burke, from Liverpool, reported a possible sighting in Lagos.
He said he saw a girl “remarkably like Madeleine” being dragged along a road to Lagos marina at 6am the day after she went missing.
===========
FFS everyone in bartending "steals" tips. he was suspected of lifting things from hotel rooms, those who go in to grab the odd camera do not turn to child abduction.
He is not a prime or even key suspect to SY who are looking for Smithman.
I doubt he is a key suspect to anyone - just fodder for the great unwashed tabloid readership.

Sorry, you make good points but I have to disagree with this statement above. I have family members who work bars and I trust them - they get on well with their other bar staff and are happy to share any tips given.WIDOWAN wrote:FFS everyone in bartending "steals" tips. he was suspected of lifting things from hotel rooms, those who go in to grab the odd camera do not turn to child abduction.
We must be careful not to generalise too much - the McCanns do plenty of that!

Re: Anorak: Finally We Get A Black Suspect (And He’s Dead)
okay, so I am being a little loose with the assumptions, I am sure there are many bartenders who don't, upon finding £5 on the bar for the customer's last drink, put it in their pocket as a tip rather than ring up that last couple pints, but I worked in a bar, and there are MANY bartenders who would think absolutely nothing of "considering this a tip" although in the US tipping is done and not so much in the UK or Europe. It's even understandable, although taking from the till rather than taking change off a table is not the same thing it amounts to the same thing, unless there's some kind of electronic cash register where you have to ring in the drink to have a ticket produced to have the drink made, using your employee number, you simply ask the bartender for the drink and they make it and many a pound or euro goes unreported in any sort of documented fashion, that leaves it open to pocket drinks revenue as a tip.LJC wrote:Sorry, you make good points but I have to disagree with this statement above. Yes many bartenders even most are scrupulously honest but if you have a drugs problem or even would like to have money to buy a small amount of pot - or a package of cigarettes, or gas for the drive home, this is not at all hard to believe and while stealing is wrong I would not assume a person doing this would A, have a criminal "record" or B move from pocketing small change to abduction/murder.
What kind of crime did this person have that would mean a pardon from someone in a high place? This seems to be more than the 5 euro till theft we're talking about.
