But is this Gerry again trying to convince us of his reasons for leaving the children alone? After all, if those stats are correct, it means Gerry feels vindicated in leaving the children alone. He is saying it is so rare that the chances of a child home alone being abducted is almost zilch, so it was okay to leave them.

I would like to see the stats for children falling from bed and dying, choking on vomit in bed and dying, having a fit in bed and dying?

I would think those stats are far higher and that Gerry would not be wishing to comment on such risk as it would make him and Kate look negligent.

It seems a strange comment for Gerry to be focusing on, but I definitely see it as justifying why they left the children.

The worst part about the interview is that the interviewer asks if there is a lesson for other parents to be learned from this, and this is when Gerry goes on to claim how safe it was and how the chances of an abduction are very small. So, in other words, his respons is NO - there is no lesson to be learned, parents can go ahead and leave their kids alone as often as they like to wine and dine with friends because the chances of a random abduction are so small. Pathetic response really. I am sure that the interviewer was expecting them to say something like children are precious, never, ever, leave them alone. But sadly, he and the rest of the world were disappointed by Gerry's selfish response absolving himself of any responsibility.
 
Of Course Gerry is not going to comment on the statistics of a child coming to harm or even death whilst being abandoned. To do so would be pointing out the unlikelihood of their fairy tale and the high probability that something else happened to Madeleine.
