The Government is powerless to stop a new phase of Romanian and Bulgarian immigration which is expected to begin on New Year’s Day, the immigration minister warned on Wednesday night.


Mark Harper said even the British courts would over-rule any measures to extend restrictions placed on citizens of the two former Communist countries when they joined the European Union six years ago.


The minister pledged, however, that Romanian and Bulgarian immigration will be on a far lower scale than when Poland and seven other eastern European countries joined the EU in 2004.


Britain imposed “transitional controls” on Romanians and Bulgarians, meaning they can only come here if they have a job, are self-employed or can support themselves.


The restrictions expire on Jan 1, giving citizens of the two countries full access to the British job market for the first time. Critics fear the change will attract more migrants to Britain in order to claim state benefits and use the NHS.

The Government have known about this for months so why didn't they take action to extend the "transitional controls for ALL immigrants for 5 years.?

Well I suppose they can all become Big Issue sellers which is a right scam. Why don't we just say no we are full which we are. In fact we are all clinging to the edge now!!

If our Honourable Members had the slightest vestige of any gonads they would listen to the people who elected them into position and pull the plug on EU membership. Cameron has been shown to be the biggest liar since Tom Pepper was a lad by promising we plebs a referendum. Doubtlessly he, along with his rent boy colleagues in Westminster, has a vested interest in continuing to allow the hordes of cheap labour from Europe and the Indian Sub Continent to flood the job market.

Any ideas what that might be Malena because I have no idea? I think it is just to keep brown nosing the EU and are scared to do otherwise. Our bankers want to stay in the EU because they would lose so much money if we came out. All those bonuses at risk!!! Our Governments, all of them, do what the bankers want, they do not seem to have a choice because for years they have given the bankers the rope to hang us all with.

I think our MPs have large amounts of dosh invested in industry, both here and abroad and use the skilled and unskilled labour pool in Asia and Eastern Europe to keep wages down by the fact no one has any job security. Workers cannot complain of poor rates of pay or successfully ask for a fair day's pay for a fair day's work, strikes are now virtually unheard of. Working conditions are often insufferable in small firms, who do exploit immigrants, both legal and illegal. The country has returned to Victorian standards and conditions in what few small industries we have left.

Here in the Midlands our huge Hosiery, Engineering and Boot and Shoe factories are gone. Hosiery is in the main from India with a small cottage industry set up in back street sweat shops and outwork, again mainly immigrants.

Our leaders must know it is happening, because everyone else in the city and their dog is aware.

Cameron is listening to big Business , not the people , yet Britain does not do much trade in Europe. He won't be forgiven by the Electorate come the Election next year . He is too cowardly to clamp down on immigration , yet that is the only way to get out of this mess. I wouldn't vote for any Party at the moment.

The straight finger that our politicians are constantly giving us will eventually give either UKIP or an extremist party, such as BNP power. Coupled with the attitude of welfare agencies who offer far more assistance to immigrant applicants and the angry indigenous population who rightly in many cases feel oppressed, there is a strong possibility there will be civil strife here in the UK.. just my opinion...

malena, the latest idea of having all night machines in Stations so travellers can use them anytime will mean railway staff being made redundant , which will mean strikes again.....why bring this up now when the economy is showing signs of recovery ??? You really do have to wonder at the common sense of the Transport Minister, if there is no one on duty at night a terrorist could plant a bomb and blow a station up.

That's one awful stretch of imagination Panda... A Cabinet Minister and common sense being mentioned in the same sentence...

They'll realise after a trial period that there is a need for night staff and put a tender out to employ private security firms. G4 springs to mind who will  undercut other more sensible and realistic bids only find they're unable to meet their contractual agreement. The Olympic Games fiasco springs to mind. Even since that blatant act of fraud, G4 have been allowed to bid for other lucrative government contracts. I'm unaware of the outcomes of their bids, but in reality they should be banned from doing any further business, government or otherwise in this country.

 I wonder who the investors in G4 are.... 'Honourable Members' :nope:of course not... they are 'Honourable Members' whose only interest is serving the public...

malena, who can have faith in Government any more???? The Labour Party has shown by Miliband that they owe millions to the Co-op Bank and must have had an idea about Flowers, yet gave him a say in Labours Affairs.!!!!

Cameron was happy to receive Murdoch's support to win the Election , took on Coulson until he was told that Coulson was facing charges in the phone hacking scandal, Rebekah Brooks and her Husband socialised with him, and he knew nothing ???????


Where do we go from here.......another destructive coalition?

A new parliament of whatever ruling party would solve nothing because the Commons would still contain many if not most of the corrupt and tainted MPs we have now and the same financial backers.

When any MPs are caught out in any of their fraudulent practices nothing is done, their pleas of 'not being aware' are almost always accepted and a return of stolen monies settles the debt or they'll receive a slap on the wrist from a friendly magistrate... Try telling the police you 'weren't aware' next time you are caught driving in a bus lane in a strange town... and see if that will get you off with a 'don't do it again' caution.

I remember reading a long time ago that Clement Attlee was the most honest and competent PM, Maggie Thatcher was tough, but as an Economist proved far more competent and to her credit never claimed all her expenses. Although many Miners suffered with health problems working down the mines there was 300 yrs supply of coal so if they had found a way of making smokeless fuel , our economy would be booming.

The ex miners are still suffering and dying from work related health issues, as are many who worked with asbestos. The associated problems with these industries were well known as far back as the 1890's I believe, yet these risks were hidden, especially with asbestos until the late 1900's. A friend of mine who passed away in 2009 was still trying to get compensation for Asbestosis right up to his admission to hospital where he died.
What a caring establishment we have overseeing our welfare.

They don't have a problem sending £millions to Europe or India on a daily basis, or bringing millions of migrants here and housing them free gratis, but put every obstacle in the path of a stress free end of life for those who made our country as great as it once was.

As for Thatcher.... Well, I think my views on her and her divisive policies, destruction of our NHS, the needless loss of so many lives in the Falklands, both Argentinian and British caused by her removal of RN vessels prior to the Argentine invasion, and her misuse of power here at home are well documented both on here and the net.....

Cameron is definitely not on this Planet.!!!! He pledged £30 million towards the Phillipines disaster and showing off because the Beckhams donated all their cast offs , he donates another £5 million, how many Nurses could that have paid for. Honest, malena, I am glad i am not growing up today, can you imagine what new parties the next election will herald in with a few seats? The Cameron/Miliband public scrapping is doing nothing to enhance their votability, there will be another coalition where nothing gets done.
