Blackmail
Not a nice word, but about the only one that covers Turkey's demands with respect to the thousands of "Asylum seekers" arriving daily from there. many of course are not asylum seekers all, although no one can blame them for wanting to leave a place where they are being bombed and shelled from all sides.
Apart from the money they want, and fast track in to the EU, where again they have little to offer, and despite their human rights record, there are a number of smaller demands, help in eliminating the Kurds being one. The one that puzzles me the most is this demand where for every migrant returned, Europe must accept one migrant living in a camp on Turkey. What is the point of that?
Leaving aside the humanitarian aspect, and purely looking at the numbers as many countries are doing now. That doesn't make sense. One is sent back to Turkey, and in return Turkey gives Europe one. Could someone explain this?

Re: Blackmail
Well Katertaif I think the original thinking was that it would stop migrants/asylum seekers from making the perilous journey from Turkey to Greece. The thinking was that if they saw people being sent back they would not bother, or that was what we were told.
Well it obviously did not work ( who thought it would?) because hardly any were sent back. We are now back to square one. Well Erdogan is a few billion better off, all from taxpayers money. Also 75 million Turkish people will have visa free travel to Europe. Also a promise of allowing Turkey into the EU. A country with a disgusting record of human rights which seems to have been quickly overlooked.
What I want to know is who voted for this stupid plan? It was no sooner said than done. Was there a vote? If there was I know of a few countries that would have had to be pushed to vote for it. Countries who still bear the scars of a certain Empire.
What a mess it all is but then the EU is a mess. They have been abysmal with any crisis they have had. Well there are only two people who make decisions within the EU, that is Merkel and her puppet Hollande. They decide what is going to happen and they rest are told what they have to do, what a mess. The EU is starting to look more like the old Moscow controlled soviet block every day. Only this time Germany in control

They take in migrants, there allowed to join plus get the billion pound, THEN when they join, the migrants leave Turkey and cross over into the the rest off the EU.
