Funny now it is Bens turn to be in the spotlight, there is always something that crops up about Madeleine.

Good morning fred, it seems these 'tours' have been running since March apparently, so they've been taking their own sweet time considering just how 'upset' this topic has made them feel...

With their HMG funded cash cow drying up they'll likely sue the 'anonymous’ guide of the free tour for 'patent infringement'.

Surprised to hear they are merely upset; there was a time when mention of "...McCanns may have disposed of Madeleine's body.." would have made them furious.

Maybe their noses out of joint as Ben Needham on the front pages - looks like rehash of info from 2008?

Madeleine holiday apartment becomes 'sick tourist attraction' one year on from her disappearance

By VANESSA ALLEN
Last updated at 09:44 01 May 2008

One year on from Madeleine McCann's disappearance, the apartment where her family stayed has become a macabre tourist attraction.

As tormented Kate and Gerry McCann prepare to mark the first anniversary without their oldest daughter, ghoulish sight-seers pose with their own children outside the flat where she vanished.

Residents and staff at the Ocean Club resort complex complained yesterday about the weird pilgrimage around Praia da Luz.

Pamela Fenn, 81, who lives above the McCanns' rented apartment, said: "It's sick, you get loads of them. There was a group of about 20 here on Saturday.

"You can't believe it. Can you imagine wanting to come and do that? They stand outside the apartment and then in front of the window with their children and have photographs taken."

The McCanns were said to find the tourists' interest "offensive and hurtful".

A friend of the couple, who asked not to be named, said: "People should have better things to do with their time.

"It is offensive and hurtful and it is disrespectful to Madeleine."

Mr and Mrs McCann, of Rothley, Leicestershire, want to mark the first anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance in private with their family on Saturday.

But today they are due to carry out an astonishing round of media interviews to speak about their search for Madeleine.

The couple is expected to appear on GMTV, BBC Breakfast, Sky News, This Morning, BBC Radio 5 Live and Five News and they gave an interview to this week's Hello! magazine.
A two-hour documentary about their campaign was televised on ITV1 last night and the family hoped it would reach an audience of up to nine million viewers.

But it was scheduled to go up against The Apprentice and the Liverpool v Chelsea Champions League clash.

The couple's spokesman Clarence Mitchell said they were determined to continue to publicise their daughter's plight.

He said: "It is their last big chance for a lot of publicity to focus the agenda back on Madeleine.

"The media interest is still high and we would be failing Madeleine if they did not focus all the attention back on their daughter.

"It is simply about Madeleine and an attempt to get new leads. Every time they do some publicity, they get new telephone calls."

The McCanns' year-long search for their missing daughter has generated hundreds of leads around the world, including several false sightings.

But it has also attracted a motley collection of psychics, conspiracy theorists, hate mail and at least one death threat.

Thousands of miles away in Praia da Luz, their rented holiday apartment has become part of a strange "tour" of the usually sleepy resort.

Residents said the tourists were mostly Portuguese or Spanish and usually visited the McCann apartment and the church where the McCanns worshiped.

Some tourists who have followed the case closely also visit the apartment block where Russian computer expert and witness Sergey Malinka lives.

Mr Malinka, 23, told a friend: "'It is disgusting. Loads of people are actually doing a Maddie tour. I have seen them.

"They wear green Madeleine T-shirts and follow each other around like Chinese tourists with their cameras.

"There was a group stood around recently. I just stood near the window looking down on them. There was about 12 of them. I thought it was sick."

Ricardo Silva, 32, who runs a coffee shop in the town centre, said: "They come here and have the same question: 'Where is Madeleine's house?'

"They are mainly old Portuguese people who come here on the coach from the north.

"They go to the church and they go and see the apartment at the Ocean Club. Then they go to Sergey's.

"It seems very strange to me but in the past year everybody knows this place. It is famous and people want to see the important places."

An employee at the Ocean Club said he believed there could even be an organised "Madeleine tour".

He said: "A bus comes and parks outside the church and lots of them get off and they come up here in a big group. It is definitely organised.

"You always get the odd one or two people who want to know where Madeleine was taken, but this is a big organised group - 20, 30, 40 people.

"They are mainly Portuguese people. I would love to find out who is organising it so we could ask them to stop."

No such organised tour has been advertised around the resort, and the only bus group to arrive in recent days said they were hikers from Canada, planning to walk along the coastline.

The resort has been hard hit by Madeleine's disappearance and tourism numbers are only now starting to creep back up.

Green and yellow ribbons hang from a tree outside the tiny church where the McCanns used to pray, symbolising hope, and a handful of posters still show Madeleine's face.

But there are few other visible reminders of the events of last year.
A special vigil is set to be held at the parish church on Saturday, when a message from Mrs McCann, 40, is expected to be read to the congregation

Tourists are being offered a ghoulish tour of the Portuguese town where Madeleine McCann disappeared

Holidaymakers are being offered Madeleine McCann tours of the holiday complex where she disappeared.

Tourists taking up the trips – which Madeleine's parents are said to find distressing – are invited to speculate on what happened to the then-three-year-old in May 1997.

The tours take visitors to the Praia da Luz apartment where the Rothley family were staying and the tapas restaurant where her parents Gerry and Kate were dining when she vanished. The organiser also takes his clients to nearby wasteland which police dug up in searches for evidence.

The tours are being offered on the internet by a British grandfather in his 60s who has become obsessed with the case since emigrating to Portugal.

A source told the Daily Mirror: "The guide is obsessed with Maddie.

"He's written thousands of words about the case and pored over maps, photographs and police transcripts."

The organiser started offering the tours in January and had the first visitor on March 8.

According to the blog used to advertise the tours, he is currently planning the fourth.

He aims the tours at Britons looking for a day trip but said he does not want payment.

In the first blog, the host said: "I think of this as the Luz Challenge. Our version of Mission Impossible.

"You have to come up with a way in which the McCanns, for whatever reason, disposed of Madeleine's body, and the body was not found in searches."

The McCanns have been cleared by police of any involvement in the disappearance of their daughter.

The guide says the tour starts at Apartment 5A at the Ocean Club Hotel, where the McCanns stayed.

From there they go a few hundred yards to the tapas restaurant – now closed – where her parents were eating, the spot where the McCanns' friend Jane Tanner saw a mystery man carrying a child. This was later ruled out as a sighting.

They will also take in the scene of the sighting by a retired businessman, who said he saw a man carrying a child in the direction of the beach.

Other places on the tour are the areas where police carried out searches two years ago and Our Lady of the Light church.

Police searched there and a nearby cemetery.

The man is said to have moved to the resort with his wife several years ago.

Thanks to "malena stool" for the Mercury link. "The McCanns have been cleared by police of any involvement in the disappearance of their daughter." I suppose the reporter interviewed the McCanns to be able to come up with that myth.
