A mother who got drunk on vodka after taking methadone has been convicted of neglecting her two children.
Police arrived at the house in Stocking Farm, Leicester, after she called them to complain about violent threats from her then partner.
The 27-year-old was asleep on the lounge floor in the afternoon, despite the television blaring out. Her daughters, three and four, were on the sofa. They were unwashed, with grubby faces.
It was a cold October day and one of the girls was naked from the waist down. Both had dirty cotton vests on.
Two officers climbed through a window and roused the mother. Her speech was slurred and she was unsteady on her feet.
There was broken glass on the kitchen floor. The "cold" and "filthy" house smelt of urine upstairs and the children's beds had just a cotton sheet on them, said Adrienne Lucking, prosecuting, at Leicester Crown Court. Apart from a few yoghurts, ice lollies and margarine, there was nothing in the fridge to feed the youngsters.
Mrs Lucking said: "Upstairs, the house was appalling and inadequate for the children. There was no clean linen in the house. There was dirty laundry all over the floor.
"The house was cold with no heating on.
"Having taken her prescribed methadone, then vodka, she was in no fit state to care for their needs."
The mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was hysterical when social workers arrived to take the girls into their care. She had denied two counts of child cruelty by neglect, on October 27.
She claimed it was an isolated incident and she only drank alcohol to calm down after being upset by her partner's threats.
She called the police from a neighbour's before going to the chemist's to get her methadone, which she had been taking for four or five months since coming off heroin. She bought the children cheese cobs and herself some vodka.
In evidence, she said she was usually clean and tidy, and the children normally had duvets on their beds. She denied there was broken glass in the kitchen . She intended going food shopping that afternoon with her mother, who arrived while police were at the house.
She was bailed for reports and will be sentenced on July 22.
The girls are in local authority care.

Re: Drunk mum neglected girls
Poor children...what is up with these mothers. It makes me so mad to think of these poor little girls living like this. They probably don't know what it's like to be loved and taken care of.I hope the mother gets herself sorted out...or maybe the children may be better of living with a family member.

Re: Drunk mum neglected girls
I hope the children get somewhere warm, loving and safe to stay whilst their mother sorts her shit out. If not, I hope they get a couple to adopt them - there are so many waiting for a chance to be parents.
