Mother questioned re child neglect

I thought that's what everyone did in this country, responsible parenting is what we are led to believe. So how come this woman is being questioned for leaving her kids alone??

Slightly off topic but I just want to say that I hope it is a council house she lives in because if it is one owed by a private landlord he will be in real trouble for not having smoke detectors. Local authorities and housing associations get away with it, of course.

I was told a shocking story a few years ago by my dad.

He had a brother, who as far as I knew had never left home. Turns out before I was born he'd been going out with a woman and they'd had a kid but weren't living together. Apparently she was a bit of a slapper and was known to leave the kid alone when she went out drinking (late 60's/early 70's). There was a fire and the poor young kid died while she was out. I was mortified when he told me,,,so very sad.

Yikes, how awful, thankfully the good samaritan neighbour did a good turn and could have saved that babies life!
I remember years back I had a flatmate who had a particularly unpleasant girlfriend who had 3 children, one night they swanned off out for the night and I was getting ready to go out myself to see my own friends when I heard a noise, they had left the three children sleeping in his bedroom in the flat, I couldn't believe it, they had tanked a bottle of vodka before going out, I hadn't seen the kids up until that point and assumed the dad had them that night but no, they were off out, it was about 9pm and they would be clubbing, they weren't the 'quiet drink' sort. Of course I was furious and couldn't get them on the mobile and stuck in the house until I could. when I did finally get an answer it was all ..... slurring, they'll be fine etc, I was saying it wasn't fair that now I'd have to stay in to make sure they were okay, I swear I threatened calling the police unless they came back and I was >< close to doing it.

Finally they did come back, after 2 hours

Horrible woman she was. Fortunately he moved out soon after but those poor kids, breaks my heart.

The children caught up in this seem to be of similar ages to the McCann children when they were left on their own. I'd find it difficult to believe some people won't be influenced by the fact that the McCanns weren't prosecuted for neglect into thinking it's okay to do it. As for the argument (put forward by those who believe leaving those very young children was acceptable) that you relax when you're on holiday, and have a false sense of security because you're away from the stresses of home life; I don't believe that for a minute. I think when you're in an environment that's very familiar, you'd be more likely to drop some of the precautions that you put in place when your children were babies. If you'd got any sense surely you'd take extra care in a place that's strange to you and your children.

the actions of this mother is truly appalling. those children are so lucky to be alive and safe. yes she should be prosecuted, so should every other parent who leaves their child alone for any length of time, short or otherwise,imo.

They hadn't seen their mother since Saturday evening!!!

what the fuck is wrong with people, this is an outrageous disgrace; those poor poor children, this really is terribly sad. Thank the lord that Mr Sullivan and Ms Dyer acted with urgency, if they hadn't this incident no doubt would have ended up with fatalities.

And to make matters worse, we have daytime presenters such as Fiona Philips, Kate Garraway, Richard & Judy telling the nation it is ok to leave your babies unsupervized, after all 'we'v all done it'.
