Os pais da menina britânica Madeleine McCann voltarão nesta segunda-feira (11) a Portugal, onde criança desapareceu há quase três anos, para uma audiência do processo em que pedem uma indenização milionária a um ex-investigador português por difamação. A informação é da rede americana CNN.

Gerry e Kate McCann querem que o ex-policial Gonçalo Amaral lhes pague cerca de R$ 3 milhões (1,2 milhão de euros) por ter insinuado em um livro sobre o caso “que Madeleine está morta e seus pais sabem disso”, segundo o porta-voz do casal, Clarence Mitchell.

Madeleine desapareceu durante as férias da família no resort português da Praia da Luz em 3 de maio de 2007. A menina, que na época tinha 3 anos, sumiu do quarto do hotel no momento em que seus pais jantavam em um restaurante perto do local.

Os McCann sustentam que a menina está viva e têm conseguido ajuda de celebridades e até mesmo do papa Bento 16 nos esforços para encontrar a filha.

Segundo a CNN, o casal deve voar para Lisboa hoje e planeja comparecer a todas as audiências, que começam na terça-feira e devem durar entre quatro e cinco dias.

Os McCann já ganharam na Justiça britânica o direito a uma indenização equivalente a R$ 1,9 milhão dos jornais londrinos Daily Express e Daily Star, além de pedidos de desculpas na primeira página dos periódicos, que publicaram histórias insinuando a culpados pais no desaparecimento de Madeleine.O casal chegou a ser apontado como suspeito pela polícia portuguesa, mas em julho de 2008 encerrou o caso após a procuradoria anunciar que não havia evidência da participação dos McCann.

O livro de Amaral, A Verdade da Mentira, foi publicado em Portugal no mesmo ano e teve lançamento na França, na Alemanha e na Espanha.

Antonio Cabrita, advogado de Amaral, diz que vai defender no julgamento o direito de seu cliente à “liberdade de expressão”.




AHA - THE MCCANNS WILL ATTEND ALL SESSIONS (4 or 5 days).

Why? On exit from the court in December, Kate McCann said they weren't disappointed because the hearings were for Snr Amaral. So, they don't need to be there.

I assume Gerry is a meticulous controll-guy...

But, to be honest, I would attend all meetings, too.

I am of the opinion that they HAVE to be there. I also feel somehow this won't go on for 4 or 5 days. I might be wrong though.

BTW Did you see the photo of the McCanns in the sky report, looking all haggard and downcast?? Makes me sick.

I think that photo might be from around the time they appeared on 'This Morning' with Phil and Fawn - I think they had some other families of genuinely missing children on as well (iirc).
