Pair arrested over death of Birmingham two-year-old

Another child possibly killed by those who should have been caring for her.

"Two people have been arrested following the death of a two-year-old girl in Birmingham.

A 47-year-old man and a woman aged 23 were arrested on suspicion of neglect and have since been bailed pending further inquiries.

West Midlands Police said the incident occurred on Monday morning in Harborne when emergency services received reports of a child in cardiac arrest.

The girl later died in hospital. A cause of death has not been determined.

West Midlands Police said a post-mortem examination carried out on the child proved to be inconclusive.

Further tests will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed it was called to a residential address in Harborne on Monday morning to reports of a child in cardiac arrest.

"Two ambulances and an incident support officer attended the scene.

"The child immediately received emergency treatment and was transferred by ambulance on blue lights to Birmingham Children's Hospital whilst emergency treatment continued on route," a spokesman said.

Birmingham's safeguarding children board said it would be investigating but could not comment further due to the police inquiry."
