SELL BY DATE CHANGES

British Households waste £8 Billion discarding Food needlessly. Best before. is for quality, use by is the date at which the item becomes suspect.
the average Household wastes £680 per year on discarding food which is quite edible. Because shoppers can fill their Fridges for a Week , there is no need to shop every day , which is why they throw food out when refilling from their latest shopping trip . In the old days, before Fridges and Freezers,
if it smelled O.K. it was safe to eat, if it tasted alright, ditto. I don"t ever remember an outbreak of food poisoning. The Food Standards Agency are to
ask Supermarkets to make the dates easier to understand.

Panda, someone somewhere out there is wasting the Stool's £680 as well as their own...we throw nothing away. Out of date is not a consideration really, as you say if it smells ok and is cooked well it is ok. We also grew up without fridges and freezers and never had problems with food poisoning....Pneumonia, Bronchitis and Rickets yes ...but not food poisoning.

Yes malena, maybe it"s time that this throw away Society created by the abundance of everything changed their shopping habits, not just on Food, on
everything really. In these straitened times we need to save on everything. I remember a few years ago the guy who came to repair my Washing Machine told me all these Electrical Appliances have an inbuilt lifetime and they are not meant to last.

THERE IS A WEBSITE FOODBARGAINS? THAT SELL FOOD THAT IS PERHAPS A LITTLE BIT OUT OF DATE,TEXTURE MAY SLIGGHTY OFF ON OUT OF DATE FOOD, BUT GENERALLY THE STUFF IS MORE OR LESS ALRIGHT.

bb. There are some market traders at Melton who are selling out of date goods in tins. As long as it's displayed as out of date I don't think they are breaking any laws..... Also goods are being sold cheaper if they are in disfigured tins which doesn't affect the quality of the contents, as far as I'm aware.

I've been told that TVs built for rental are constructed to different standards from the same TV for sale in public outlets. This could be true because the two TVs I bought both died within months of the guarantee expiring, while the ones I have since rented seem to go on for evermore with little or no trouble.

I have no qualms about buying out of date Food, I remember going to one of these Pubs in London where they have Comedians on stage and this
American guy was very funny. He was on about the way food etc is labelled and said "how do we know that milk will only last for 5 days? Did the Cow tell us? Who decided that perfectly edible food should be destroyed after it"s sell by date expired.?

Use by dates have to be put on all food stuffs, even on honey, which is the one food product which, amazingly, never goes off.

well, I was watching a discussion on sky News earlier and it appears shoppers are confused by "best before" and "sell by". A Restauranter said "best
before"relates to quality of the item, and "sell by "is the optimum time for consumption. Common sense tells us when a product is still edible

Mumbles, I agree with what you say about the nose knows best!!! Years ago I bought some chicken from M & S, well within the "sell by" date. When I opened the packet it stunk to high heaven. Needless to say it wasn't used!! I now sniff chicken when I have bought it and if it isn't smelling nice it goes back to the shop. Hubby calls it " wiping my nose on the chicken". I don't literally but have a really good smell of it.

ooooh the discussions we have over sell by dates in our family! My sister and her hubby will not touch anything past it's sell by date, whereas me and mum say use your eyes, nose and mouth to decide if something's still edible.

My old 80 year old neighbour never had a fridge, even in hot summer she'd have a chicken for sunday dinner then eat it as the week went on. It stayed covered on a marble slab from her old mums pantry, but once she told me it got maggots so l said 'oh no what did you have for tea then?'

'The chicken!' she said, 'l just ate some from the other side, that side didn't have maggots'


Now that's where l draw the line. Mind you she lived to be 82 and was barely ill upto dying.
