Perhaps one of the most bizarre aspects of the case of missing Madeleine McCann is that, within days of her disappearance, her parents submitted a trade mark application on her behalf. Trade marks are typically used to protect commercial property rights, so that, in this bizarre case, it seems that not only was Madeleine perceived as a missing daughter, but also as a future commercial concern, the rights of which were required, to protect the commercial interests of Team McCann. In a way, it's easy to see why Madeleine's image attracted substantial sums for the interested parties. Personally the thought of a 'trade mark' for a missing child sounds pretty sick to say the least, and brings a certain disgust at the whole question of her loss. But what is your opinion? Is it customary to mark a missing child this way? Was the McCanns' child an exception, whose name needed to be trade marked in the circumstances? Source: ipo.gov.uk

It is astonishing that with a few days of a young girl's disappearance all the proactive activity seems to hinge around the fund - failed charity status, trademark, website to promote it etc. And they wonder why there are "nutters" out here.

Why classes 36 and 41? Financial, investment and Education classifications?

My brackets are the classes: Classes 1 to 34 are for Goods, 35 to 45 are for Services.

Madeleine disappeared on the 3rd May 2007 and on the 18th May 2007 a trade mark was registered for Madeleine MCCann No Stone Unturned, for various paper goods, materials,etc. How on earth did they know that she would not have been found in a very short time. Remarkable presence of mind even if ideas came from other people, why was the thought that she would not be found, it seems a number of people believed she wouldnt be found in the long term.

Yup, some even gave up their careers at this point (John McCann) when in fact Maddie should have been able to be found at any minute. Strange lot.................

Even more strange the classification of a trademark for monetry affairs such as insurance, banking???

I knew what you meant kitti.....not sure which of us 'd be on last legs, me or computer!

Just noticed the 'trademark' (which expires May 18, 2017) is being discussed on twitter. Who would have thought nine years ago we would still be hoping for justice for Madeleine in 2016. The discussion on twitter is whether or not the McCanns obtained a U.S. trademark as well as the British one. It has been said that they did, although it took longer to get than in the U.K. Gerry was mighty busy in the days following Madeleine's "disappearance" planning the long term agenda. I guess we will have to watch to see if the McCanns apply to have the Fund trademark extended beyond May, 2017.
