NEW MADDIE EVIDENCE

BBC Panorama – Madeleine: The Last Hope? is on BBC1 tonight at 7.30pm Clearly within that material the answer could lie Det Chief Insp Andy Redwood

25th April 2012 By Jerry Lawton, Chief Crime Correspondent

THE British detective leading the hunt for Madeleine McCann says he has the “best opportunity” ever to discover what really happened to her.

Det Chief Insp Andy Redwood is the first officer to get access to both the UK and Portuguese files into the child’s disappearance, which he says puts him in a “unique position” to solve the mystery.

And he says the clue that could crack the case could well lie within the 40,000 pieces of evidence his team of officers are currently sifting through.

MADELEINE MCCANN HUNT RELIEF

“Clearly within that material the answer could lie,” he tells tonight’s Panorama. “We are here in terms of seeking to bring closure to the case.
“That would be the ultimate objective. Closure means establishing what has happened to Madeleine McCann – solving it, of course.”
Mr Redwood talked to the BBC news show nearly five years after three-year-old Maddie vanished from her family’s holiday apartment in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz while her parents Kate and Gerry dined at a nearby tapas bar.
Despite several claimed sightings around the world in the months and years that foll-owed, no trace of the youngster has ever been found. But Mr Redwood believes his team on Operation Grange, a review of the case launched by David Cameron last May, could provide some answers.
Portuguese police remain the lead investigators and the UK team reports to them – but Mr Redwood, speaking a week before Maddie’s ninth birthday, said his 28 detectives were determined to solve the case from their central London HQ.

And he said the key is being able to see all evidence collected by police in Portugal and the UK, as well as private investigators, which were used by Kate, 44, and Gerry, 43, after Maddie’s disappearance in May 2007.

“At no time before have those three elements been drawn together in one place,” he said. “What we’ve done is to bring to one place all those pieces of the jigsaw.
“There is ultimately a process of us turning every single piece of paper over and interpreting and analysing what is contained within them.
“The systems and processes we are bringing to this set of circumstances will give us the best opportunity to find those investigative opportunities that we can then present to our colleagues in Portugal.”

BBC Panorama – Madeleine: The Last Hope? is on BBC1 tonight at 7.30pm.

Post  kathybelle Wed 25 Apr - 6:09

I would like to know why an officer from Scotland Yard, is going to speak on Panorama about this investigation, when the review hasn't reached it's conclusion. David Cameron lead me to believe that Scotland Yard were assisting the PJ with this review and the PJ were in charge of the review. I'm amazed that the PJ are allowing this interview to take place. Unless they didn't want the interview to take place and a higher authority has once again intervened and overruled them.

Reading between the lines, it's looking like the McCanns are going to be exonerated and Goncalo Amaral and his men will get the blame for allowing the so called abductor to flee, because they bungled the investigation.

The McCanns know, that the PJ and Scotland Yard are aware that they have played more of a part in Madeleine's disappearance. They also know that it's highly unlikely any charges will be brought against them. Too many people in high places, have a lot to lose if the McCanns are ever prosecuted for their crimes. These people know that if the McCanns are charged, they will squeal like pigs, if they go down they will take anyone they can with them.

I am only giving my opinion and I hope I've got hold of the wrong end of the stick.

I don't believe that a review can exonerate the McCanns. Unless they find Madeleine and the person(s) who abducted her, the McCanns will always be the prime suspects.

I actually read this as not looking good for the McCanns. If this officer feels that the case can be solved by combing through the files alone, well we all know which conclusion the files led the PJ to. Since the files have evidence of an abductor, or even an abduction, I don't see how anyone can come to any other conclusion.

When can Madeleine be declared dead? Is it 7 years? I think that Natalie Holloway was just declared dead after 7 years. Not sure how the courts work in Portugal, but oftentimes a civil conviction can be obtained against someone when there is insufficient evidence for a criminal prosecution (OJ Simpson comes to mind). The burden of proof is less in a civil case than a criminal case. One can only hope.

Of course it does Mr R - and if you cannot see what the answer is by now then I am afraid you have been wasting your time and our money!

Not all of the pieces of the jig-saw will fit together as some do not belong to the same box - to the picture which shows the truth. The fact that you are tying to make them fit together worries me as that will simply come up with a muddle that does not fit together.

I hope SY have not spent he last year mixing £3m worth of concrete for the Mc's to pour over their back garden!

Agreed.

I'm quite shocked at the pessimism that currently abounds, especially as we haven't even seen the programme yet, but I fully understand that headlines and TV trailers without full context can be interpreted in many ways.

David Cameron stated that nothing from the so called review would ever be made public, so what is all this about?

Quote......The legal enforcement bodies within Portugal, the UK enforcement agencies of which the police are the main part, and also and unusually the private investigation world which as we know is an element that was used by Mr and Mrs McCann in the search for their daughter." unquote..

The above paragraph says it all for me, I think there will be a world shortage of whitewash on the way.

I agree.
Even Amaral "admitting" he made mistakes, has to be taken in the context of the whole discussion. A simple question - did you make mistakes - answer yes. He would be a silly man to say no, they made no mistakes. IMO then it is time to start talking about cover ups and police fit ups. Every investigation has mistakes. They are being run by humans so it is a given. We need to see the entire programme to know exactly what was said and why. I bet what they have already shown were the more "juicy" elements of their interviews. There may not be much more of interest !

I am disregarding the newspapers. They have been so long without this story on their front pages, they are running away with quotes and it is the usual sensational stuff.

At the end of the day, this programme is not an official announcement. It is a tv programme. Of course the general "feeling" it will give is important, however if SY are doing their job properly it should not be overly sympathetic to one side or the other. No guarantees that will happen, but if it even provides a 50-50 viewpoint I would be encouraged.

We do not know what they have seen in the with-held files, we do not know if they have since taken possession of medical records or anything like that. Neither are they going to tell us tonight.

Exactly so.

Fortunately, as the programme is being shown sooner than originally scheduled, there isn't long to wait.

But whatever is in it (or is omitted) is bound to cause howls of outrage from all "sides", probably wrongly, yet doesn't affect the actualité one whit.

I am a firm believer in your first reaction to something being the right reaction, you know the thought that immediately springs to mind, before you have time to analyse and over think something ?

When it was confirmed that the programme has been moved forward what came to my mind immediately was could this have been done on the basis there actually might be progress later in the week or indeed next week, at which time the BBC could not screen the programme on the grounds of it being an official and open investigation.

Obviously I have no basis for saying this and once I started to consider other possibilities my excitement began to diminish but maybe just maybe.

Exactly - confirmation should be obtained that SY did in fact obtain all these records as if they didn`t it`s all been a totally corrupt review and hopefully will be exposed.

I'm with you here - I even wondered if the reaction on the Radio Times site last weekend might have reminded someone just how many people simply do not believe the Healy & McCann "version of the truth" and just how many questions need to be addressed.
