MADDIE MCCANN TRIAL ‘RUINED OUR MARRIAGE’

THE wife of former Portuguese police chief Goncalo Amaral today reveals how the libel action brought against him by Kate and Gerry McCann wrecked their 10-year marriage.



The McCanns will begin the action in Lisbon on Thursday seeking £1million damages over claims about their missing daughter Madeleine.

Speaking exclusively to the Sunday Express, Mr Amaral’s wife Sofia, who is separated from her husband, said: ‘‘He is almost broke and the strain of all this legal action has made him ill and ended our marriage.”

Kate and Gerry have decided not to attend but Mr Amaral, 54, will be there for the four-day trial even though he does not have to give evidence. He insists he does not have a secret pot of “Maddie gold” from the publication of his book The Truth Of The Lie [click for full English translation of book - HLM] and will defend his claim in it that Madeleine could have died accidentally in the Praia da Luz apartment on the Algarve on May 3, 2007, aged three.

Sofia added: “I am really worried about his health.”

So, on the face of it GA is more stressed out than the McCanns ever were. I hope all of this comes out in Court. Is this the reason for Sofia's outburst to the press, to make the world aware of the plight of her husband and also of his financial situation? Is it a case of two can play that game? What's good for the McCanns is good for the Amarals as well. He has no choice really but to lay his cards out for all to see. After all its the sympathy vote that decides many things at the end of the day but, I have no doubt, on top of everything else a Court can judge genuine distress from the faked crocodile tears which the McCanns shed. Mr Amaral will need all the help he can get, however he gets it, but I've no doubt his wife is telling the truth and the strain has been enormous.

The judges aren't fools, they know the score and the spin the McCanns have put every aspect of Madeleine's disappearance affecting 'their' lives... Little or no mention of how Madeleine might have fared in the cruel hands of her 'abductor', other than she'll give him her 'tuppence-worth'.

The judges will also note the fact that the McCanns are conspicuous by their absence, (assuming they continue to claim their presence is not necessary) and wonder why they cannot face the man they have harassed for 5 years, to the point of bringing him before the court... Yet Amaral will be there ready to defend his corner.

My thoughts are they haven't the spine to stand and tell him to his face, show and indeed prove to the court that his actions and penmanship have ruined their lives and impeded their search for Madeleine.
