They're all over the place! I tend to work out with things like tea bags whether 2 smaller quantity ones are cheaper than the bigger one and often they are!

THERE WAS THAT ONE I MENTIONED A FEW WEEKS AGO ON THE FORUM.
IT SAID ON A COMET RECEIPT THAT SOMETHING COST £15,SAVE £15,SO IT NOW COST £15!
A GOOD QUESTION IS WHAT SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICS DID THESE PEOPLE GO TO.

God, how I loved to post open letters to Brown... He was a natural target. Slow, unkempt, one eyed, spluttered and drooled and stupid.

I have seen lots of 'daft offers',infact it is now almost a full time job if you want to get the best value for your 'weekly shop'.
Often you can buy two smaller packs for less than the equivalent larger pack.

Best not to get tempted by the BOGOF offers on perishables unless you know for sure you're going to eat them as more often than not it just gets thrown away so actually has cost you more.

If you are shopping in the prepack shelves always go to the back of the shelf as you are more likely to find the best dates there.

When you talk about 'daft' offers i assume you are talking sales gimmicks rather than stupid pricing mistakes ?

I bought some oatcakes at Sainsbury's last week. A pack of organic was about 10p more than non-organic, but the organic pack weighed 300g and the non-organic 200g. Organic then!

Years ago we bought a wet-and-dry Hoover from an online place and when it arrived, they had sent us two. Two identical Hoovers. So we contacted them in case it was a mistake and we:got told no, it was a special offer. Two for the price of one. I ask you, what use does anybody have for two identical Hoovers? We gave one to the charity shop as we didn't have room in the flat to keep both.

It is a very odd way to promote sales if true but there is some sad logic in there somewhere.

There was a cat food offer last weekend where two small packs were much better value than the 'Special Offer,' large pack!

There are red faces at Tesco this morning, after a report of one 'half price' deal, which seemed to be more expensive than the full price. The deal in question was for a box of Thorntons chocolates with a large Half Price sign. The smaller print, however, showed the price had increased by 35p.

It's not the first time there has been a pricing mistake - but fortunately sometimes it works in our favour.

 photo a-THORNTONS-386x217_zps7952b704.jpg

The blunder, reported by the Daily Mail, was spotted in a Tesco Express at the Mailbox in Birmingham. A Tesco spokesperson told the newspaper it was just a labelling error. It said that shoppers were being charged £3.50 - half the original price.

This isn't the first time that there's been a mix up on the shelves. The same newspaper ran a story last August of a bottle of mineral water on the shelves at Tesco for 25p - or two for 70p.

The Guardian, meanwhile, asked for their readers' favourites 18 months ago. Among the examples from Tesco were butter reduced from £1.39 to £1.39, orange juice at £1 each or three for £3, and pomegranates for £1 each or two for £3.

Sainsbury's meanwhile produced a few examples, including crusty rolls at 40p or two for £1, and pies reduced from £1 to £1. While Asda managed ice scrapers at £1 or two for £2.50.

In our favour
But while these mistakes reveal a shocking prevalence of individuals writing signs and stocking shelves who haven't mastered the basics of arithmetic, there is a plus side, because occasionally these things work in our favour.

Sometimes Tesco will accidentally run more than one promotion on a product at a time. The store may apply both at the same time, and an incredible bargain will result.

In August 2011 this resulted in Terry's Chocolate Oranges selling for less 29p - down from £2.75, after a buy-one-get-one-free and 'three-for-£5' offer were implemented at the same time.

Then in November last year, the clash of an offer of three bottles of wine for £12, and 25% off when buying six bottles, meant £9.99 wines were being sold for £1.50.

These glitches tend to be sorted swiftly, so need to be captured fast. If you're keen to cash in, you'll need to sign up with a deal hunting website or two. Something like hotukdeals.com is a good start, as is moneysavingexpert.com.

So what do you think? Are you sick of seeing these mistakes, or are you happy to see them as long as it also means it sometimes works in our favour? Let us know in the comments.
