Tina Turner to be granted Swiss citizenship


Pop legend Tina Turner has given up her US citizenship to become a citizen of Switzerland, after living in the country for nearly 20 years.

Tina Turner has been enjoying all the Alpine air and muesli Switzerland has to offer since 1995, and now she is on her way to being granted citizenship.


Tuner, who is 73, has passed a local civics test and interview according to an official announcement published in the Zuerichsee-Zeitung daily. Turner relocated to Switzerland in 1995 with her longtime partner, German record executive, Erwin Bach. Turner's spokeswoman said that the singer wanted to "clarify her situation". Her citizenship application will still need approval from the canton of Zurich as well as federal authorities before she can receive a red passport.


Turner lives in the picturesque town of Küsnacht, on the shores of Lake Zurich, an area which has previously been home to Carl Jung. Turner's music is popular in Switzerland, with a spiritual singing album she released in 2009 peaking at number seven in the Swiss charts. Children Beyond, a 2011 follow-up, also made the Swiss charts. Turner is currently recording Beyond 2.


The Simply The Best singer is not the only celebrity to enjoy the delights of Switzerland: Phil Collins, Shania Twain and Roger Moore all have homes in the country. Turner told German newspaper Blick, "I'm very happy in Switzerland and I feel at home here. I cannot imagine a better place to live".

I believe muesli is available in supermarkets around the world now so that seems an unlikely reason for moving there.
Some cynical people seem to be hinting that she has moved there to take advantage of the Swiss tax laws, to which i should point out that it is quite possible to live and work in the UK and take advantage of the Swiss tax laws - or the Caymans, Holland or Monaco.

Tina lucky...Switzerland one of the only countries who still maintain their citizenry, and don't allow immigrants to dilute its culture...

You haven't been here recently, then ...
In a total population of around 7.5 million, around 2 million are non-Swiss.
There is major concern about east-europeans and other migrants who seem to be flooding the place.
The Swiss make it hard to live and work here, and yes, depending on your residency permit you can be deported for traffic violations (usually if your record is already less than pristine!), but there are an awful lot of immigrants.
I should know. I am one.

Switzerland citizenry voted not to enter the European union...and see how
well that country continues to flourish....Britain is dealing with
immigrants flooding that country and having its health and many social
services be burdened by immigrants...I have nothing against immigrants,
just like the the Swiss folks want to maintain their culture..

Hi wantthetruth Actually I have high regard for Tina, she walked away from her despicable Husband with only the clothes she had on. Her talent has made her rich , not the work of others which earn all the profits for their Bosses to hide in Swiss Banks.

And actually, it's not as easy to hide money in Swiss banks these days. Times have changed.

However, as regards getting citizenship here, money certainly talks.

I think she has lived in Switzerland long enough to prove she regards it as her permanent home and at 73 yrs of age, she is not going to start a family.

It could be because she has family in the U.S.A. and she doesn't want them burdened with Inheritance Tax if she is a

Swiss Citizen.

As for hiding money in Switzerland, a couple of years ago UBS a Swiss Bank were fined a lot of money in the U.S.A. for some financial malpractice . The US said if UBS gave them names of US Citizens with bank accounts in their Swiss Branch they would waive the fine, UBS provided 100 NAMES!!!!!!! That is only one Bank, it's possible many moved their money to other Countries after that.

Yes, it almost finished the UBS off. Credit Suisse had a smilar crisis.

They're recovering well now though.

And for sure, tax would be a major reason to take up citizenship. Although I don't think you need to give up one citizenship to have the other. Or perhaps that just applies for EU citizens, not USA

I don't know , anyway, I have a lot of respect for Tina and it appears from her work now that her music is shown on Swiss T.V. rather than the U.S. and she retired from world wide Concerts many years ago.
