It's difficult to tell with Gerry McCann whether it's just his misuse of the English language or if he has let something slip. For example he doesn't mind people 'purporting,' theories! And he thinks the police develop 'theses,' whereas the police develop theories: they don't need to write a thesis about the investigation!

So, did Gerry mean Madeleine was still a very frenetically active child, in toddler mode, or did he let slip that there was a progressive condition, which could lead to her being less active, but she wasn't in that stage yet? Gerry uses English like a Japanese taxi driver learning English on the streets of Delhi!

It seems to be some kind of translation, I think (along the same lines as that story about how M enjoyed getting the adults to chase her around.) Maybe English > Portuguese > English?

Oddly enough I was just thinking of translations for the words still and always. If an error in translation somewhere and not a direct quote from the English text, perhaps Gerry said Madeleine was 'always very active.'

I think 'elle est encore tres active (sorry can't do the accents) encore can also mean 'also' in this context? I can't find it but I believe it was in a French interview? So they'd have translated into French and then back to English. The whole exchange sounds a bit stilted to me. Possibly because there isn't an 'errrm' or 'to be honest' in sight.

Using the numbers on the right of your keyboard alt + 138 = è and alt + 130 = é

Also alt + 0231 = ç as in Gonçalo

Perhaps the Tapas mob's statements will make more sense in Klingon.........

Going back to the original "still active" comment I must admit that I think that it does mean "always active".

E along with Alt Gr will do it :)
The funny remark of Mr Gerry also ties in with an odd one of Auntie Bigmouth. When asked in an interview, what had Kate and Gerry told the twins, she replied " we've told them that Maddie's with... Well, we don't know where she is ".
That response has always bothered me. :(

It's odds on Auntie Phil was going to say, "Maddies with Jesus".
But, that would have let the cat right out of the bag.

When you look at the whole thing, it's more obvious (I think) that it's a translation issue. Seems like it could well be from French to English (noting 'they spent there great moments'). I've never noticed the McC's using the word 'super' but this could be a translation of the French, 'superbe' (not sure if that's the right spelling?). In fact, I feel as if I recognise this interview... Kate saying something like, 'yeah...we we having a great week' and Gerry talking about Madeleine wearing the adults out etc.

K- We had a super week. We came with a group of friends who themselves have children. Ours had more small friends. There was this club for children with lots of activities. They spent there great moments.
G.- Madeleine, in particular, has a lot of fun. One day, she even did sailing with the club.
K- She played tennis.
G- In the evening, adults stood together and the children were on their side. It was fun sometimes to hide and they were pursuing us.
P.M- How was Madeleine during these holidays?
K- She is very intelligent, very sociable and engaging. She loves to talk, she is funny, she has a lot of energy.
G- She is still very active,

I have a dream - seeing Philomena in the witness box. No wonder she wasn't chosen for the rogatories to back up the storyline. I always thought she meant to name one of the family, but this is far more likely - it's what you tell the children.
The family behaved just as strangely as the parents, not searching, treating the whole things as a holiday, iirc they packed their swimsuits and didn't cancel a holiday in Turkey in June.

It's probably the interview published in Paris-Match september 2007. It was a very long article I translated with the help of another English lady and posted on the 3A. It's perhaps "always" and not "still" but I can't check because I have no more the original text. I sent the Paris Match to Nigel.
