Rooney right for Gunners - Usmanov

Wayne Rooney: Has been linked with Arsenal

Arsenal shareholder Alisher Usmanov believes Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney would be a "great success" if he joined the north London club.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has been promised significant funds to build a squad this summer capable of mounting a sustained title challenge, with England forward Rooney among those linked as potential marquee signings, having handed in a transfer request at Old Trafford at the end of last season.

And Usmanov, who holds a 29.9 per cent share in Arsenal, reckons the unsettled 27-year-old would be a big hit at the Emirates Stadium.
He told American television channel CNBC: "(He is a) great player. If he comes it would be a big success for Arsenal and for Rooney also."
Usmanov also expressed his support for Wenger, who oversaw a strong finish to the 2012/13 campaign as the team finished fourth in the Barclays Premier League to secure a Champions League qualifying play-off place.

"My point of view is that Arsene knows best," the 59-year-old Russian added. "Of course, we as shareholders do point out some drawbacks in managing the club, in steering its way through.

"But I believe he is a great coach and he has already proven that last season

Rooney is 27 years old which should be at his peak now.Its hard to see how he could work with Moyes bearing in mind their history.
A move to Arsenal would surely be a step backwards, though Coleen may fancy living in London i think it more likely that they could fancy a couple of years in the sunshine before the kids reach school age so maybe a move to Spain or Italy ?

He could have played a role in Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels instead of Vinnie Jones without being out of character...

I just don't think he's that good really.

To be fair i think he's grown up a bit since he had his hair transplant and stopped shagging them old sorts from the back streets of Manchester, well i guess he has anyway !

Well he's got two young sprogs and a half intelligent wife so i suspect he will become a better person now if not a better footballer.

Home»Sport»Football»Teams»Manchester UnitedWayne Rooney urges David Moyes to let him leave Manchester United after failing to see future at club
Doubts were growing over whether Wayne Rooney would ever play for Manchester United again after the England striker told David Moyes in person that he could see no future for himself at Old Trafford, leading to suggestions of a backlash from his furious United team-mates.

Rooney failed to travel with the United squad to Sweden for tonight’s pre-season friendly against Stockholm and, although he has suffered a genuine shoulder “knock”, the injury is not particularly severe.

His omission from the match follows fresh talks with Moyes, his manager, over recent days in which Rooney made it clear that he was disillusioned and felt that, after nine years and 197 goals, he had reached the end of the road at United

Chelsea had a second bid of £25 million rejected on Sunday night and are now expected to raise their offer to £30 million. Arsenal also retain a genuine interest. Rooney would prefer to move to an English club and is particularly attracted by the possibility of working under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea. Rooney has yet to submit a formal transfer request but that remains a strong possibility.

Although United have tried to convince Rooney to stay following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, the 27-year-old is adamant that he wants to leave. The problems stretch back over the past year under Ferguson, with Rooney unhappy at how often he was played out of position.

He has also been hurt by some of the suggestions that appear to have emanated from Old Trafford relating to his lifestyle and fitness. Rooney’s issue is specifically with Ferguson rather than Moyes. With Ferguson still involved at United as a director, the player thinks he would be unable to make a fresh start this season.

However, he is now facing a dressing-room revolt from his team-mates, who believe he has undermined United’s preparations for the new season.

While Chelsea lead the chase for Rooney, Arsenal should not be ruled out. Though most attracted by a move to Stamford Bridge, he would give their London rivals serious consideration and it is conceivable that United would rather do business with Arsène Wenger than Mourinho. Along with Manchester City, Chelsea are regarded as United’s principal rivals for the Premier League title and it could be considered less risky to sell Rooney to Arsenal. It is understood that the Rooney situation is beginning to cause tensions in the dressing room, but United remain adamant that they will not sell at any price.

United, however, had previously made it clear that they expected Rooney to play in Stockholm tonight. They even produced a poster on Twitter with a huge picture of Rooney that was accompanied by the words “10 – back”.

United insist that they will not soften their stance over Rooney but the saga is threatening to damage their pre-season. Rooney returned early from the club’s summer tour with a hamstring strain and has not played since the end of last season.

His lack of match practice makes him a major doubt for the Community Shield on Sunday against Wigan Athletic, for England’s game against Scotland at Wembley on Wednesday week and, increasingly, for the start of the Premier League.

He suffered his shoulder injury during a practice match on Saturday against Real Betis and it has been assessed by a club doctor.

The club decided not to take any risks, although it is understood the injury could have been managed for an important game. “Wayne hurt his shoulder in a fall,” Moyes said. “It’s not too serious and I don’t expect it to keep him out for too long. I’m disappointed he’s missing the game because we were keen to get him back involved.”

Rooney’s chances of being allowed to leave United have not been helped by the club’s failure to land any of their main transfer targets. They are still trying to sign Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona and are preparing a third bid of £35 million. However, Arsenal have an option to re-sign the midfielder and Wenger has already made inquiries about him.

Arsenal have also made an inquiry about Rooney, although their primary target is still Luis Suárez. Liverpool rejected Arsenal’s unusual offer of £40,000,001 but the forward remains keen to leave Anfield.

Arsenal are hoping that Suárez will push to leave in the belief that a clause in his contract allows him to talk to another club if Liverpool are not in the Champions League and receive an offer of more than £40 million.

Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal captain, stressed yesterday that he was certain Arsenal would recruit in this transfer window. “I am sure they are going to do it,” he said. “It takes time.”
