Published: 18:47 GMT, 20 May 2014  | Updated: 19:43 GMT, 20 May 2014  A British baby has been taken into emergency care in Portugal as police probe claims her parents were ‘drunk and disorderly’.

The pair allegedly threw their 14-month-old girl into a hotel swimming pool in front of horrified holidaymakers at their Algarve resort.

The mother was also seen staggering around with the little girl in her arms on the eighth-floor balcony of their hotel room, it was claimed.

The couple were staying at four-star Hotel Paraiso (pictured) in Albuferia when staff called police after they allegedly threw their 14-month-old baby daughter in the swimming pool

Police were called by concerned hotel staff, and they discovered unexplained bruises on the child’s body, according to local reports.

Yesterday prosecutors were questioning the couple while their baby was being cared for at a children’s hospital in the regional capital Faro.

The latest drama unfolded on Sunday evening at the four-star Hotel Paraíso, which describes itself as ‘one of the most charismatic and well-known hotels on the Algarve’.

A police spokesman said: ‘We were called to a tourist resort where a foreign couple were drunk with a baby child and causing a disturbance.’

Last night a hotel worker claimed: ‘The couple were drunk and the child was thrown into the pool and was in danger. She was taken to hospital.’

Newspaper Jornal de Notícias claimed the mother was drunk with her baby on the balcony of the family’s eighth-floor room.

A witness told the paper: ‘It was a tremendous fright, seeing the mum bumping into the walls with the baby in her arms, falling to the ground, getting up and falling again.

‘I thought the little girl would fall over the balcony.’

The girl was taken into the care of social services in the regional capital of Faro, while her parents were questioned by police in Albuferia

Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias claimed: ‘The couple threw the baby into the pool, causing enormous concern to hotel guests having dinner nearby.’

When police were called, the father allegedly ‘tried to fight’ with officers, according to local reports.

The couple were not arrested, but face two separate investigations, one by the Albufeira Judicial Court into the alleged behaviour of the father, and the other by the Family Court in Portimão to determine the welfare of the baby.

A hospital spokesman said later that the little girl was fine, with ‘no health problems’.

Yesterday, after being interviewed at Albufeira Court, her parents were allowed to visit their daughter in the hospital.

They had been coming to the end of a week-long holiday, but will now need the permission of the family court before being allowed to return to the UK.

They are believed to be from Belfast in Northern Ireland.

Initial reports in the Portuguese media that the baby had been ‘doped’ with sedatives were later dismissed when tests on the baby proved negative.

Last night the Foreign Office said: ‘We are aware of an incident involving a British couple and we are providing consular assistance.’

Thanks Karen , I seem to remember another case of Parents drinking in a Bar in Portugal and leaving their child to it's own devices. The Portugese must think the Brits are dreadful Parents.!!!

It's to be hoped the "consular assistance" doesn't turn into political interference.

Yes, that's the one NBY, I thought the couple were Holidaymakers, not Teachers living in Portugal.!!! They didn't seem to have any conscience about it.

''I had drunk two glasses of wine as I'm four months pregnant and the doctor said it was no risk to my baby.
''We don't know why the police got involved. There were lots of children running around and she was never more than a few feet away from us."

Can you believe it??

This is where the difference is, they, unlike the Teflon Duo have to stay in Portugal, yet the Mccanns were able to hotfoot it back to the U.K. even though they were arguidos!

Yes fred, wasn't it U.K. Government interference that made it happen but the McCanns were DOCTORS....and that made all the difference.

Good morning Panda

The McCanns may be doctors, but I will never believe that the reason they were protected, was because they were doctors.
Until I know different, I believe they were protected, because they've either taken part in some sordid unlawful act, or they know of people in high places, including members of the British Government, who have taken part in some sordid unlawful act.

In my opinion, the speed the British Government sprang into action, after Gerry McCann made that call, was unprecedented. The British Government were not interested in Madeleine's whereabouts, all they were interested in, was protecting the McCanns.

The same goes for the wealthy people who began to fling money at the McCanns, within hours of the news of Madeleine's disappearance being made public. None of these people put one foot in front of the other, to look for Madeleine, all they were interested in, was helping the McCanns.

I felt physically sick, when I heard Richard Branson publicly state, that the McCanns were innocent and he would pay for the best lawyers available, if they were to be prosecuted. Branson kick started a fund with £100k, which would go towards the McCanns legal expenses. He stated he was going to persuade other wealthy people to contribute to this fund.

Morning Kathybelle,

There was a rumour that Gerry was a Fundraiser for the Labour Party and maybe had info on dodgy donations which could have embarassed Tony Blair which is why he phoned the British Ambassador to Portugal, John Buck to hurry down to PDL and offer his help. In fact it was John Buck who alerted the Foreign Office about the anamolies in the Tapas Group Statements and left Portugal 3 months later. !!!

Branson did not donate £100,000, he said he would donate it IF the McCanns were charged with anything. You have to wonder WHY the Fund was set up so quickly ....how did the McCanns know that Madeleine would not be found in the interim???

I totally agree with you Kathybelle. Unless and until it is proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the McCanns were not involved in the disappearance, then I will believe they are and this will be until my dying breath.

Hi Keela, I agree the McCanns are culpable , that Madeleine died in 5a and Gerry disposed of her body. The problem we face is the clever way the McCanns have so far still got support and think Blair and Brown were responsible for shielding them , Clarence, whether we like him or not, has been instrumental in making sure that Madeleine has been kept in the spotlight and the McCanns squeaky clean . Of course, Cameron was gullible enough to be taken in by his "friend" Rebekah which is why nearly E6,million has been spent , when the first consideration for Redwood should have been a recon based on everyone's statements, not just the Tapas 9.
