CASH CRISIS HITS SEARCH FOR MADDIE

Cash crisis hits search for Maddie as fund is down to last £46k
MADELEINE McCann’s parents are desperate for new donations to fund the search for her
By Jerry Lawton / Published 31st August 2016
More than £4.2million has been donated to the fund since she vanished in Portugal in 2007.
Last year’s accounts showed just £746,152 left and sources suggest it is now just £480,000
And the couple face paying £434,000 to Portuguese ex-police chief Goncalo Amaral’s lawyers after losing their libel action against him.
That would leave £46,000.
The McCanns were hoping to use the cash to pay for private investigators
They have already had to axe their spokesman Clarence Mitchell to save cash.
He has agreed to work for them when he can to keep costs down.
Yesterday the fund’s website was still asking for public donations and selling T-shirts, wristbands and car stickers.
Parents Garry and Kate, from Rothley, Leics, continue to believe Madeleine, who would now be 13, could still be alive.
A source close to the McCanns said: “They can’t rely on the Met Police inquiry continuing forever and they are making contingency plans."
The Met believe that Madeleine may have disturbed burglars.

Don't know how they've got the nerve to keep asking for money like this

Re: CASH CRISIS HITS SEARCH FOR MADDIE
So what do they need the money for? They're not actively employing anyone to look for Madeleine. Possibly getting rather worried that they will lose the case against Gonçalo Amaral and the fund won't have enough to cover even their own legal fees. Maybe Kate on at risk of having to find a job!

Oh don't go there Anna, she would have to have follow a period of return to practice training in order to re-register and what senior partner in their right mind would welcome her into their practice?

Re: CASH CRISIS HITS SEARCH FOR MADDIE
Having re-read the Star article this morning, I wonder if Jerry Lawton is now questioning where did all the money go. He mentions the 4.2 million which was donated, the balance last year of 746,152 and a current balance of 480,000. He estimates that after the loss to Mr. Amaral, the balance in the fund would be 46,000. In order to keep costs down, the McCanns 'axed' Clarence Mitchell and the fund's website (aka the McCanns) still asking for donations and selling T-shirts, wristbands and car stickers.
In a roundabout way I think he might be reminding the public know that, in addition to the 12 million pound (and counting) of public money which has gone into the SY investigation, plus the 4.2 million donated by the public to the fund, the McCanns still need, no, make that WANT MORE to continue to search for Madeleine, something they themselves have never done.
Whatever happened to Auntie Phil's assertion, I think she said that the McCanns and other family members would sell their homes to finance the search. Property values have increased steadily over the past nine years - all that real estate should be able to cover the search at least until the big tenth anniversary next year.
I really hope SY is taking a very close look at how the fund has been operating as part of their ongoing investigation.

At the very least I hope HMRC are having a long hard look at the company funding the legal action. Both are directors and since the libel action is personal whatever the declared motive, it is difficult to see why the funding is not a taxable benefit.

Very good point - that comment is something a Chartered Accountant would be thinking about.
