Can you please help to reduce neglect of children, by both parents and Social Services, by signing these three petitions on the Prime Minister’s website?

By Sharon Bradford and Tony Bennett of The Madeleine Foundation, 21 Nov 2008 [NOTE: There are details of my own petition elsewhere on ambersuz' forum, but I though I would also bring you details of these other two]

Child neglect and ill-treatment have been in the news this month with the news of the terrible circumstances of the death of Baby P. Issues of young children being left on their own were raised by the Madeleine McCann case and other recent cases where children have been left home alone. Social Services’ failures have also been exposed.

On the Prime Minister’s website, the degree of support for various reforms is noted directly by the Prime Minister’s staff. There are currently over 5,000 petitions on the Prime Minister’s website. Three petitions on child neglect and child cruelty are on the PM’s website, and in the top 250 or 5%; here are the links and brief details:

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Justice4Tiffany/
Calls for stronger penalties against parents killing their own children
So far signed by 2,060 - ranked 51st.
Originator: A Nisbett. Expiry date 2 Jan 2009

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Savekids/
Calls for thoroughgoing reform of Social Services
So far signed by 448 - ranked 204th.
Originator: Sharon Bradford. Expiry date 18 Feb 2009

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/no-to-neglect/
Calls for leaving young children on their own to be made a criminal offence
So far signed by 378 - ranked 243rd.
Originator: Anthony Bennett. Expiry date 11 Feb 2009

How to add your name.

1. Visit the links above.
2. Type in your name. Pseudonyms are acceptable
3. Type in your e-mail and address which will NOT BE DISCLOSED
4. If not in the U.K., you can sign as an ‘Expat’, see box below the address panel
5. Wait for the PM to e-mail you (happens immediately)
6. Click on the link in the e-mail sent to you by the PM. As soon as you do that, your name is added.

It will take you no more than 2 minutes to sign each petition

Here are full details of the actual petitions and the supporting statements of each of the three petitions:

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Justice4Tiffany/

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Increase the sentencing of those resposible for the death of children as a result of child abuse & neglect

More details from petition creator:

3 year old Tiffany Hirst was found dead in the accomodation above her parents pub in Sheffield in Sept 07. Tiffany died of severe malnutrition & had not been given water or food for at least 20 hours before her cruel death. Regularly starved & locked upstairs, she was left her alone for hours while her parents went out or worked downstairs in their pub. Dog filth littered the floors upstairs, bare electrical wires were in Tiffany's reach, dirty clothes and dishes were piled high and dirty nappies dumped on the floor. Tiffanys Body lay decomposing for 2-3 days before her death was reported. Tiffanys mother was charged with manslaughter & sentenced to 12 years imprisonment, her step father was charged with neglect & sentenced to 5 years imprisonment.

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Savekids/

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Demand radical reform of the current laws obeyed by Social Services and radical reform within the Department of Social Services

More details from petition creator:

I have heard the quote "lessons will be learnt" too many times by Social Services when a child dies due to extreme child neglect and abuse at the hands of their parents or carers. There needs to be radical reform in the laws obeyed by the Social Services and within Social Services Department in its self. This reform should include more powers to access and remove (if necessary) children from suspected child neglect and abuse situations. Heidi Koseda aged 4 died in November 1984, Heidi was locked in a cupboard and died from starvation and thirst, her decomposing body was found some 2 months later when Social Services finally requested the assitance of the police to gain access to her home. Our Government, current laws and Social Services failed this small vunerable child as they have failed thousands. Social Services are not doing what they should be doing, protecting children. I believe this is due, primarily, to the improper restrictions of the laws obeyed by Social Services and incapacities within Social Services. Latest victim Jessica Randall aged 53 days

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/no-to-neglect/

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Bring in a new law to make it a criminal offence to leave children aged under 12 on their own

More details from petition creator:

More and more children aged under 12 are being left on their own at home by their parents without proper supervision. The law on this point is totally unclear and appears to be covered only by the 1933 Children and Young Persons Act. The topic of young children being left on their own has been in the news in the past year and it is submitted that now is a good time to review existing laws. The dangers to young children of being left on their own are numerous and potentially very serious. The law should deter people with children under 12 from even thinking about leaving them on their own. [Note: any law would allow children under 12, depending on their age, to be left on their own if there were ‘reasonable grlounds’ for doing so]

I've signed yours already but I'll go sign immediately the other 2!

Actually I'm really disgusted that there are so few signatures on these petitions with all the people there are worldwide who say they do not agree with neglect and abuse of children....you'll think that people would rush to sign them and send the links to others to sign too!

after the victoria climbie and baby p incident did anyone think they would? the govt have never cared or bothered with kids welfare so why should they start now? its more paperwork to pass this law so its easier to bin it. plus if they pass it and parents break the law there isnt enough prisons to accommodate them or enough homes for kids to go to. the govt have enough funds set aside in case of war though.

child neglect and child cruelty..........PETITIONS (3) Empty Petition Rejected

Post  Guest Sat 16 May - 9:25

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Child-Safety/#detail

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to request that Leicestershire Social Services fulfil their statutory obligation to investigate the circumstances which led to 3 year old Madeleine McCann and her younger siblings being left unattended in an unlocked, ground floor hotel room.

We ask that the Prime Minister do this to reflect an evenhanded approach to the important issue of child protection.

We also wish to ensure that no parent will ever be able to evade responsibility for the safety and welfare of their children by citing the example of Mr and Mrs McCann, whose negligence is unreasonably being discounted in the tidal wave of sympathy brought about as a consequence of their media campaign".

So far so good.

This can't be true can it ? What language are we supposed to use when referring to the McCanns? Is there the verbal equivalent of genuflecting?

This sucks. Had parents from a caravan site in Bogor been named the rejection would have been worded differently.

It is because we have accused them of a crime perhaps?

Shall we try again and word it differently?

Well the way this expenses saga is developing, Gordon Brown and his thieving cronies could well be out of a job soon. Some of them might even find themselves in the courts and hopefully the McCanns will be alongside them when their political protection bubble bursts.

By rejecting the petition, they have drawn attention to themselves and the public will now wonder why. Also, Gordon Brown is not well thought of over in the UK.

Very true Granny and if they find "Freeport" mixed into this there could be bigger troubles ahead.
