Nightclub Fire Kills More Than 100 In Russia

More than 100 people have been killed after a fire ripped through a nightclub in Russia

A further 134 people were injured as crowds tried to escape the blaze in a club close to the city of Perm near the Ural mountains.

It is believed to have been caused by indoor fireworks.
Most of the victims died of smoke inhalation.

Flames shot up as around 230 people partied inside the Lame Horse to celebrate its eighth year in business.

"The fire spread very quickly," said chief investigator Marina Zabbarova.

"Panic arose which led to a mass death of people."

TV footage showed charred bodies lying in rows outside the venue.
Rescue workers carried bodies on stretchers into waiting vans.

Onlooker Svetlana Kuvshinova said the fire started after sparks from three firework fountains ignited the plastic ceiling.

"The fire took seconds to spread," she said. "It was like a dry haystack. There was only one way out. They nearly stampeded me."

A government commission has been set up to probe the tragedy, with two planes sent to transport people with serious burns to Moscow hospitals.
