It's more specifically when a person is convinced that they are in love with someone and that their feelings are reciprocated but in fact the other person may barely, if at all, know of their existence. If anyone else saw a programme some years ago about a woman stalking the DJ Mike Read, that illustrates the syndrome.

There is also an absolutely dreadful book called "Are You Lonesome Tonight", written by Elvis Presley's "one true love". I do hope that she has received some medical help since writing it!
