Dog used in drug farm raid at former hosiery factory, Leicester court told

A police officer has told a court how his dog helped round up suspects following the discovery of the city's largest cannabis farm.
Police were called to the former Sky Fashions hosiery factory, off Saffron Lane, Leicester, after a neighbour reported suspicious behaviour, on September 28.
When officers called, they found 4,400 cannabis plants and the remnants of hundreds more that had been harvested.
The men inside fled.
Five men are on trial accused of operating a cannabis farm. They deny the charges.
Yesterday, Pc Douglas Marshall told Leicester Crown Court that he and his dog Ferros were first on the scene.
He said: "The door at the front of the premises opened and I was aware of an Oriental gentleman coming out.
"That gentleman quickly turned round and went back into the premises.
"I went into the building with Ferros and, after issuing the challenge, I released the dog and followed him in."
The former factory, in Cyprus Road, also contained 393 lamps and 47 extraction fans.
Ferros led Pc Marshall to a window and he found a man sitting outside on the roof. The man, Huong Nguyen, 26, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to growing cannabis at an earlier hearing, the jury was told.
The officer described finding another man in an alleyway behind the factory.
He said: "I was at the back of the premises and before I released Ferros, I was aware of another gentleman lying on some concrete a small distance ahead of me.
"It was easy to see his leg was at a very obscure angle."
He said the man, who was treated for a broken leg, appeared to have fallen from the roof of the factory onto a nearby outhouse, which was badly damaged.
After searching some gardens in the area, Ferros found four more people under a hedge.
Pc Marshall said: "He started barking, which is what we teach the dogs to do when they have found someone.
"I noticed he was standing over a person lying down in the undergrowth.
"As I continued to shine the torch, I saw there were three others there."
During yesterday's hearing, the jury also heard from Det Con Rob Buckley, who said a number of people would have been needed to run the cannabis farm because it was so "labour-intensive".
He said: "In a normal cannabis farm in a domestic house, you usually find 200 to 300 plants being tended by one or two people using automated equipment.
"But in this case there was no automation. It would have been very labour-intensive growing the plants, harvesting them and preparing them for distribution.
"They would have been working in shift patterns."
Ming Fen Wu, 37, Jian Chen, 27, Zhi Lin, 28, and Xiao Chen, 30, all deny the charge.
They are on trial alongside the factory's leaseholder Mohammad Khan, 54, of St Paul's Avenue, Willesden, London, who is accused of running the illegal project.
The trial continues.

Panda you are right, also feeling a 'pang of guilt' might suggest he had a conscience.Panda wrote:I wonder if Gerry read this and felt a pang of guilt for saying "ask the dogs".....nah, he"s too arrogant for that.

Read this article on Sky News:
A couple have been arrested after the bodies of eight newborn babies were found in northern France.
Proves dogs are REALIABLE. Gerry McCann should be worried.

A couple have been arrested after the bodies of eight newborn babies were found in northern France.
The corpses were discovered in individual plastic bags hidden around two houses in the tiny village of Villers-au-Tertre, about 35 miles from Lille.
Police were alerted after a family moved into their new home and found infant bones while digging a swimming pool in the garden.
The bodies of two babies were found at that site.
Officers traced the previous occupants, who were living less than a mile away in the hamlet.
Sniffer dogs found the bodies of six more newborn babies there.
"Two people are being held in custody. They are the mother and father of the children," said public prosecutor Eric Vaillant.
A local councillor said the unnamed couple are both in their 40s. He said the husband is a builder and his wife a nursing assistant.
Le Figaro newspaper said two of the bodies had been hidden in the first house for more than 20 years.
Sky's Alex Rossi, at the scene, said: "Investigations are continuing but the couple have been charged with burying bodies illegally.
"But we are told these charges may be increased to manslaughter or murder depending on the direction this case takes.
"Although investigators are warning that the couple should not be judged by the media, as they say at this stage there may be extenuating circumstances."
The former mayor of the village, Daniel Collignon, said he was "still in shock" after hearing the news.
Residents also spoke of their shock as scores of journalists swamped the village.
"They are normal people, who even have a role in the community," said one neighbour. "It's incredible."
They said the couple were grandparents and had two grown-up daughters.
France has seen a string of cases in recent years of mothers killing their newborn babies and hiding the corpses.
In March, a 38-year-old mother was jailed for 15 years for killing six of her newborn babies and hiding their bodies in bin liners in the cellar of her home in Valognes, near Cherbourg.
CĂ©line Lesage was found guilty of suffocating four babies and strangling two others after giving birth to them in secret between 2000 and 2007.
Another French woman, Veronique Courjault, was convicted last year of murdering three of her newborn children.
Her husband discovered two of the corpses in a freezer while they were living in South Korea.
During the trial, psychiatrists said she suffered from a condition known as "pregnancy denial."

Note the interesting bits in bold, sniffer dogs (unhelpfully!) managed to find the bodies and it mentions the bodies had been there more than 20 years. You cannot eliminate a body forever, the laws of physics tell us Maddie is somewhere, must be twitchy bottoms in Rothley Towers again today.

Thanks for posting. Didn't realise that sniffer dogs had detected the babies' bodies in France. Hope that fact is mentioned in the British media. People should be reminded of the reliability of sniffer dogs from time to time. However, unfortunately, I think it's only obsessives like us who will make the connection to the McCanns..

Been checking and the use of sniffer dogs is being mentioned in the media re French story. Funny how these 'unreliable' animals are still doing valuable work worldwide eh McCann?

It's interesting that on Swiss websites this story can be commented on, but not in the UK media. Are the UK media worried that comments will mention the McCanns?

Have posted a comment about French case on youtube McCann sniffer dog video, but it's pending approval. Be interested to see how far Carter Ruck have succeeded in suppressing freedom of speech on this case...
