Four children have died in a house fire in the village of Hulland Ward, near Ashbourne, according to Derbyshire Police.
Highfield Road, Hulland Ward, Derbyshire
The fire on Highfield Road caused significant damage to the property
Emergency services were called to a semi-detached house on Highfield Road at around 11.30pm last night.
A police spokesman said two boys, aged nine and four, and two girls, aged six and two, were killed in the blaze which caused "significant damage" to the property.
A spokeswoman for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said four fire engines attended the scene, adding: "The fire was well developed on arrival."
The children's mother, believed to be in her 40s, survived and is being treated for the effects of smoke inhalation at the Royal Derby Hospital.
Police and the fire service have begun an investigation into the cause of the incident which is currently unknown.

Re: housefire kills 4 children
Very, very sad story. Demonstrates how quickly totally unexpected tragedies can wipe out almost an entire family.
Does make one wonder if there were smoke alarms in those apartments in Portugal though. And if so, whether these would have been of much use what with the parents beingat the bottom of the garden 120 metres away.

A very sad case.
I have to say that this seems to happen more often than in Portugal. In fact, it is very rare to see anything on the news here about children being killed in a home fire. Maybe it has to do with the way the buildings are constructed. Here, they almost always made of mortar and brick, even the interior walls and there is no dry wall.

And of course had there been a fire in Apartment 5a (God forbid) on 3/5/07 there would have been zero sympathy for the Mcs from day 1.

Re: housefire kills 4 children
According to a news report we have just seen this family have complained about threats to firebomb their house previously and evidently the last time they phoned the police nobody answered the phone !

Re: housefire kills 4 children
That looks like a Council house to me. I have lived on Council estates, some were lovely and some were very rough. Where I used to live it was common for people to be threatened with being "burnt out". Two houses were fired resulting in the death of an old man and a young woman. There seemed to be a lot of jealousy and trying to "out do" each other where I lived.
Its about time the Police and the Council took threats like these seriously. Its no good waiting until a tragedy occurs like this.
R.I.P Little ones.
